British Open 2012 Standings: Day 2 Highlights, Cut Line Update and More

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

Day 2 of the Open Championship was kind to some golfers and a terrible experience for others.

Brandt Senedeker continued his tear through Royal Lytham and St. Annes and took the lead from Adam Scott by shooting a 64 during Round 2. Scott is sitting one stroke behind the American.

Tiger Woods put himself in excellent position heading into the weekend and is alone in third place.

The second romp through the course turned into a poor day for Rory McIlroy. The youngster finished play yesterday at three under, but after ending today’s round at five over, he is nowhere near the top of the leaderboard.

Phil Mickelson continued to struggle and he did not make the cut.

Here is a full rundown of everything that happened today, as well as a look forward at the rest of the tournament.

Day 2 Highlights

The unquestioned highlight of the day came from Tiger Woods. Stuck in a bunker off the right side of the green during the final hole of the day, Woods chipped the ball in for a birdie.

The incredible shot was followed by a signature Tiger fist pump.

Brandt Snedeker was not entirely outdone by Tiger as he sank an incredible 45-foot putt for birdie on the sixth hole.

This was the finest of many superb putts for Snedeker on the day.

Missed the Cut

The cut was set at plus-three, and a few notable names will not be on the course this weekend.

Phil Mickelson is the most notable golfer whose tournament came to an early end. Sergio Garcia, David Duvall and Davis Love III will all pack up their clubs as well.

Day 3 Projections

Snedeker Stays Strong, Tiger Closes Gap

Brandt Snedeker has been near perfect during these first two rounds. The 31-year-old has not bogeyed any of the 36 holes he has played.

With rock-solid consistency and incredible focus, Snedeker will not waiver—regardless of whatever winds may blow in Lancashire.

But Tiger Woods will certainly have momentum as he starts play this weekend. His incredible shot to end Round 2 is a sign of things to come.

Woods will track down Scott and move into second place by the time Round 3 is over. This will set up a thrilling final day at the Open Championship.

Who Will Lead After Day 2?

Snedeker has been unflappable. Not shooting a bogey in the first two days in a major is a ridiculous accomplishment. In fact, the last player to accomplish this was Woods in 2000, as noted by ESPN

He is on fire right now, and it will be nearly impossible to catch him if he continues on his torrid pace.

Snedeker has never won a major, so the pressure will start to build now that the tournament is passed its halfway point. Still, his fine play will continue through Saturday.
