British Open 2012 Leaderboard: Brandt Snedeker and Biggest Surprises After Day 2

Mike HoagJun 4, 2018

Brandt Snedeker had 150-to-1 odds of winning the British Open before tying the two-day course record of 130 on Friday afternoon. He has never made the two-day cut while playing at Lytham.

Snedeker wasn’t happy with the impressive 66 he shot to start the Open on Thursday. In remarkable fashion he tied the single-game course record of 64.

Snedeker, the former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2007 hasn’t lived up the great promise he started with. He’s currently the 26th ranked player in the world and has earned his position atop the leaderboard with consistent play through 36 holes. Though he hasn’t recorded a single eagle, he also hasn’t shot above par once.

It doesn’t get any more consistent than that.

Two tie the course record in first two days

Trailing close behind Snedeker is Adam Scott who surged to 9-under-par to finish out a second day of impressive play. Scott, like Snedeker, also matched the course single-round record of 64 on the opening day of the tournament.

Both have played consistently as well besides delivering those masterful performances. The two find themselves atop the leaderboard through 36 holes.

Rory McIlroy starts solid; falls apart on day two

After one day of play, McIlroy, 23, looked to be on the verge of stepping back into the relevance of PGA Tour discussions. After shooting a respectable 67 on day one, he followed with a devastating 75 which may have punched his ticket home and out of the Open.

McIlroy didn’t struggle quietly on day two. One of his tee shots pegged a spectator in the head after his errant drive went out of bounds.

That pretty much summed up the British Open for McIroy who is at risk of missing the cut heading into the weekend.

Phil Mickelson crashed and burned

Phil Mickelson is going home early from the British Open. He failed to make the second-day cut after an uninspiring 11-over-par score after 36 holes.

"

“I feel fine, it’s just my play sucks,” Mickelson said, according to Cameron Morfit of GOLF Magazine. “I don’t know. It’s just really sloppy, everything feels off. I don’t know what to say. I’ve got some time now to figure it out.”

"

Suck his play indeed did at Lytham in 2012. Mickelson struggled with a 73 on the opening round and completely melted down Friday by answering with a 78. Those two horrific rounds were good enough for a tie for 147th place.
