NBA Summer League Schedule: When and Where to See Best Remaining Vegas Action
The NBA's Summer League is coming to a close on July 22. Until then, there are still some exciting matchups worth watching before the league calls it quits on Sunday.
You shouldn't pay as close attention to the win and loss column but to the chemistry developing between some of the featured youngsters participating in this league. The Charlotte Bobcats are currently undefeated at 4-0. That alone is telling of the insignificance of the scoreboard.
What you can glean from these games is how far along some of the youngsters of your favorite organization really are. At the same time, it’s smart to keep tabs on the development of the competition. The NBA Summer League is the perfect forum to address how well your team has prepared for the future through its development of youth.
Here are some games that are sure to not disappoint if you tune in this weekend.
Memphis Grizzlies vs. Charlotte Bobcats (Friday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. ET)
The Charlotte Bobcats have started out an impressive 4-0 thus far in the 2012 NBA Summer League. Second year man Kemba Walker has led the charge with 7.2 APG.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Charlotte’s No. 2 overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft, hasn’t disappointed—when he’s actually played. Kidd-Gilchrist exploded for 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in his Summer League debut.
The Grizz on the other hand are trying to avoid losing a second straight game. They are led by Josh Selby, an explosive second round pick from 2011. Selby has lit it up in Memphis’s two games thus far this summer, averaging 27.5 points per game and leading the league in scoring.
Memphis’s 26-year-old guard Jeremy Pargo has also been impressing. His 12 PPG and 5.5 APG have helped fuel the success of the Grizzlies thus far. The duo of Pargo and Selby has been explosive, and it will be up to them if the Grizzlies are to remain in the winning column and defeat the explosive youth movement going on in Charlotte.
Miami Heat vs. Portland Trail Blazers (Saturday, July 21 at 4:00 p.m. ET)
Portland Trail Blazers rookie point guard Damian Lillard has stolen the show at the 2012 NBA Summer League. Lillard’s ability to run the point as well as light up the scoreboard has propelled him into the limelight as one of the summer’s best talents.
Likewise, Trail Blazers 7’1” rookie center Meyers Leonard has proven to be an imposing force in the paint. His game is clearly above the level of competition offered in the Summer League. If he can transition his 10.3 PPG and 9.2 RPG into the NBA this fall, he will find himself a big part of the frontcourt rotation in Portland.
Portland’s young summer team has excelled and improved to a 2-1 record. Does the chemistry of Leonard and Lillard have enough steam to defeat the confidence of the defending champion Heat’s youth?
Miami’s team is led by second year point guard Norris Cole. Cole, a standout at Cleveland State University, was used sparingly in the Heat’s championship run this past spring. However, he is continuing to show his development and superiority over his peers in the Summer League. He’s averaging 13.7 PPG and five APG thus far while leading the Heat to a respectable 2-1 record.
Golden State Warriors vs. New Orleans Hornets (Saturday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. ET)
Golden State’s duo of second-year guard Klay Thompson and rookie Harrison Barnes has propelled the Warriors to an exciting 3-0 start to the NBA Summer League. There is no denying the excitement these two bring to the game when on the court. Thompson is averaging 20 PPG and has given Warriors fans a glimmer of excitement heading into the upcoming season.
Barnes and Thompson aren’t the only excitement for Warriors fans. The performances of rookies Festus Ezeli and Draymond Green have made the Warriors one of the deepest and best young teams in the Summer League.
The New Orleans Hornets, on the other hand, have not been as fortunate in their Summer League performance. No. 1 overall selection Anthony Davis has not been present due to his commitment to the Men’s USA Basketball Team. Fellow rookie Austin Rivers has not excelled as expected after he was selected with the Hornets’ second lottery pick. Hopefully he can break out and spark the Hornets to a surprise victory to finish their Summer League schedule off on a positive note.
