Is Tony Romo the New Danny White?

Jason HenryFeb 19, 2009

I remember reading an article prior to last season about Tony Romo that stated how he was changing his throwing motion a little, and emphasizing staying in the pocket a second longer instead of scrambling if the play breaks down.

Of course this was all before he broke his pinky, the defense checked out, and Felix Jones was lost for the year.

So his personal game improvements didn’t seem to mean much as the Cowboys struggled to a record of 9-7.

But Tony Romo can’t shoulder all of the blame for a team that succeeded in being the most overrated and underachieving team of 2008.

There was turmoil in the locker room, the beginning and the end of the Pacman Jones era, and the trade for Roy Williams.

With everything that happened with the ‘Boys, Romo passed for 26 touchdowns and 3,400 yards.

Well, now it’s the offseason and the annual criticism of the Dallas star has begun. In his second full season as starter, he could not guide the team to the playoffs.

The team collapsed toward the end of the season again, and the Cowboys are forced to retool for next year.

This is where the comparisons to Danny White start. White led the Cowboys to three straight NFC Championship games, but never could get them over the hump.

He was selected to one Pro Bowl and made the All-Pro team in 1982. Sound familiar to current Cowboys fans?

White followed in the footsteps Roger Staubach and did an admirable job attempting to duplicate the success of a Hall-of-Fame quarterback. But he never made or won a Super Bowl, which was his undoing.

Most Cowboys fans are hoping for a different outcome in the Tony Romo era. He isn’t quite as successful as Danny White, but has all the intangibles to become a winning NFL quarterback.

Until Romo proves otherwise in regards to his play on the field, he will be the modern-day Danny White for the Cowboys.

In the end, all the blame may not lay at his feet. He works hard at his craft and is constantly attempting to better himself at doing his job.

But since he’s the quarterback of the most recognizable team in America, Tony Romo warrants any and all criticisms and accolades that are thrown in his direction.
