British Open Live: Leaderboard Update on Top Golfers

Brian MaziqueJun 1, 2018

Awesome low scores were the order of the day at Royal Lytham St. Anne. There were 36 players that finished the first round under par.

Tiger Woods was among them, he shot three-under 67 and finished the day tied for sixth place. He is definitely in striking distance, but with so many players posting strong rounds, he is just another face in the crowd right now.

He'll need an equally strong second day—if not stronger—to separate himself from the group.

The other big names and notable performances heading into the second round are as follows:

Adam Scott six-under 64

He isn't Tiger, but he is the leader after the first round. His performance set a course record for a single round. But the question is: will he be able to keep up this pace?

He last won on the PGA tour in August, and he has only eight tour wins as a professional. As the event progresses, he'll need more stellar performances to stay ahead of the crowd.

Rory McIlroy three-under 67

McIlroy posted one of his best rounds in months yesterday. He looked confident, which has been an issue as of late. The only real blemishes on his day was a bogey on the 10th hole, and a nasty double-bogey on the 15th.

Were it not for those stumbles, we may be talking about McIlroy leading after day one.

As it stands, he is in excellent shape to be there at the end.

Nicolas Colsaerts five-under 65

He had one of the nicest shots of the day, making an eagle putt on the second hole to give himself a awesome start. Unfortunately, he followed it up with a bogey on the par five third hole.

He was still very solid throughout the rest of the day. He played well, but I'd be shocked if he was around the leaders at this time tomorrow. He's ranked No. 173 in the world, and this is only the second major he's played in his 12-year career.

If he remains in contention, it will be one of the tournament's biggest stories.

Phil Mickelson three-over 73

Not everyone had a great day. Mickelson continues to struggle, and yesterday was especially discouraging considering his peers played so well.

Lefty lost four strokes between holes seven-through-nine. It began with a horrible double-bogey on seven, and he bogeyed both the eighth and ninth holes.

He is certainly capable of putting together a monster round, but if the high-level of play continues from the field, he may not be able to recover from yesterday's disaster.
