West Virginia Football: Breakdown of New Commit Isaac McDonald

Oliver Crawford IIIJul 19, 2012

On July 14, the West Virginia Mountaineers picked up a huge commit—literally—from the state of Florida in outstanding safety prospect Isaac McDonald.

He became commit No. 9 for the 2013 class, and the Mountaineers continue to pick up steam in the month of July on the recruiting trail.

Consider this yet another victory for the Mountaineers over Clemson, as McDonald had just recently decommitted from the Tigers prior to committing to WVU, according to Rivals.

Not to worry, WVU fans, because this commit is a very solid verbal. That's about as sure as you can get when it comes to 17 and 18-year-olds. In fact, McDonald is very fond of former Mountaineer standout Robert Sands, according to 247Sports.com.

There are striking similarities between the former and the new Mountaineer commit. For starters, both are very big prospects in the secondary, the area that McDonald is projecting to play.

McDonald is actually taller at 6'6" and 205 pounds. Sands, by comparison, stands at 6'4".

The new West Virginia commit hails from Champagnat Catholic High School in Hialeah, Florida. The pipeline to Florida continues yet again for the Mountaineers.

This player was a highly sought-after prospect, and has a very impressive offer list to prove it. He chose WVU over Clemson, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Stanford among many others.

This is yet another outstanding recruiting job by Robert Gillespie, who mans the South Florida region of recruiting for the Mountaineers.

McDonald is a 3-star recruit, according to both ESPN and Rivals. As his offer list indicates, many coaches are very high on his talent across the country.

He is an absolute animal pursuing the football and possesses great technique when tackling the ball carrier. He is the definition of a ball-hawking safety, and will have the opportunity to play the day he steps foot on campus.
