NBA Summer League Schedule 2012: Most Exciting Remaining Games on Vegas Slate
With the 2012 NBA Summer League a little past the half-way point, there has been plenty to talk about thus far. Having said that, there are still four days of games remaining and plenty more interesting storylines to follow.
The results of the games themselves may not matter, but watching and tracking the development of rookies and other young players is entertaining in itself.
The vast majority of this year's top rookies have been competing in and excelling in the Summer League, while several second-year players and undrafted rookies have been showing what they can do as well.
Some teams are chock full of promising young talent, while others are nothing to write home about, but there is something worth following in every game.
Here are the three best remaining games on the Las Vegas slate as the 2012 NBA Summer League wraps up over the next few days.
Boston Celtics vs. Sacramento Kings (Thursday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. ET)
The Boston Celtics were the best team in the Orlando Summer League, and they have been arguably the best team in Las Vegas as well, with a stacked roster in terms of talented youngsters.
Guard E'Twaun Moore has led with way, dropping 25 points on the Chicago Bulls, but players such as Jared Sullinger, Dionte Christmas, Kris Joseph and JaJuan Johnson have been key contributors as well.
The Sacramento Kings haven't equaled Boston's on-court success thus far, as they are just 1-3, but they have some elite talent on their roster as well.
The surprise standout has been 26-year-old guard Josh Akognon from the Chinese Basketball Association. He leads the Kings in scoring, but second-year man Jimmer Fredette and this year's fifth overall pick Thomas Robinson are the main guys to watch.
There are several potential future stars in this game and that makes it worth watching.
Portland Trail Blazers vs. Atlanta Hawks (Thursday, July 19 at 6 p.m. ET)
While this game may not exactly excite anyone during the regular season, the Portland Trail Blazers and Atlanta Hawks promise to put on a great show in the Summer League.
The Blazers have some top-level talent, but nobody has been as good as rookie point guard Damian Lillard. The No. 6 pick in the draft has lit up the opposition to the tune of 26 points per game in two contests.
Center Meyers Leonard, the Blazers' other first-round pick, is still raw. However, the seven-footer has acquitted himself quite well.
The Hawks may have more quantity than quality on their roster, but Vanderbilt rookie guard John Jenkins makes them a team worth keeping tabs on.
Atlanta has played four games and Jenkins has been a stalwart. He is leading the team with 16.3 points per contest and is shooting a blistering 44 percent from beyond the arc.
Last year's second-round pick Keith Benson and this year's second-rounder Mike Scott have been solid as well. The Blazers and Hawks should be very competitive.
Golden State Warriors vs. New Orleans Hornets (Saturday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. ET)
The Golden State Warriors are likely to be one of the league's most exciting young teams this season, and their performance in the Summer League seems to foreshadow that.
The Warriors are 3-0 and have been mowing down the competition with their up-tempo attack.
Second-year guard Klay Thompson is averaging over 20 points per contest, while rookie Harrison Barnes has chipped in with 17. A pair of other rookies in Draymond Green and Festus Ezeli have contributed as well, making Golden State perhaps the deepest team in Vegas.
Some of the buzz surrounding the New Orleans Hornets was lost when first overall selection Anthony Davis was named to the US Olympic team, but they still have a Summer League team worth keeping an eye on.
Although he is averaging 10 points per game, rookie guard Austin Rivers is struggling while shooting 21 percent from the field. He is capable of putting on a show, though, and you never know when he might break out. This one should certainly be an up-and-down affair.
