Toronto Blue Jays: Brett Lawrie Leaves Game with Right Leg Injury

Craig AmosJun 6, 2018

New York is an expensive city to visit. The restaurants are pricey, accommodation is pricey and the shows, well, those are pricey too.

The Blue Jays, however, paid a price for their three-day trip to the Big Apple that far exceeded any expectation.

On Monday night the team lost Jose Bautista, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of wrist inflammation.

A terrible price to pay, yes, but that's just the half of it.

That's because Brett Lawrie exited Wednesday afternoon's game after diving into the left field camera dugout while giving chase to a foul ball. Not willing to give up on the play, Lawrie hurled his body over the fence designed to protect players from falling into the depressed camera area.

Lawrie was able to walk off the field under his own power, but was in visible pain. Initial X-rays have come back negative and Lawrie is currently day-to-day.

That there is no structural damage is a good thing, but that same good news landed Jose Bautista on the DL just two days prior to Lawrie's injury, so the young third baseman's time on the shelf is unknown.

Unfortunately, the timing couldn't be worse. The Blue Jays are finding themselves progressively more and more undermanned while in the midst of a firefight for the AL wild card.

Lawrie is the latest Blue Jay to go down with an injury in a season that has seen three of the team's starting pitchers miss most of the summer and half of the bullpen make extended trips to the DL.

13 is supposed to be a cursed number, but apparently the Jays just couldn't wait for their bad luck and decided to make 2012 the year of the injury.
