British Open Cut Line 2012: Players Teetering on Brink of Complete Meltdown

Brian MaziqueJul 19, 2012

Rory McIlroy needs a good showing at the Open Championship in the worst way.

He and Caroline Wozniacki haven't been great for each other's athletic careers. Love is a many-splendored thing, but it can also wreck a golf swing and a backhand. The two have been dating since 2011, but recently both have performed beneath their standards.

Going into the British Open, McIlroy has missed three of his last four cuts. Wozniacki has stumbled from her world No. 1 ranking and continues to descend.

McIlroy needs to play well at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Though he was born in Ireland, he identifies himself as British. He has a great following in England and will be trying to shake off his recent poor play.

If he misses the cut in this tournament, he'll have some self-examining to do.

Other golfers whose recent play has to have them wary of the British Open cut line are:

Phil Mickelson

Lefty bombed badly at the U.S. Open and the Greenbrier Classic. With Royal Lytham & St. Annes shaping up as a very challenging play, there is cause for concern.

He played well at the Scottish Open earlier this week, but he faded to 16th place. If Phil Mickelson is to be a factor at the British Open, he'll have to remain composed throughout.

Precision golf is needed at this course, and I'm not sure Mickelson can win a tournament like this.

Sergio Garcia

He was once touted as a legitimate rival for Tiger Woods, but he hasn't accomplished anything that would warrant that title.

He has already had a mini-meltdown at the U.S. Open. After a less-than-favorable shot, Sergio Garcia took a whack at a ground microphone, destroying it in the process.

Garcia has experienced a great deal of frustration in major tournaments. He has three second-place finishes in the sport's biggest events, but he has been mediocre lately.

He's had only one Top 10 finish all year, and at 32 years old, the clock is ticking for him to capture a major. Can he do that at Royal Lytham & St. Annes? On this course, making the cut isn't even a given for him.

We shall see if he destroys the course or just more ground microphones.
