WWE Money in the Bank 2012: Dolph Ziggler Will Restore MITB's Lost Luster

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

When the idea of Money in the Bank was first conceived in WWE, it was met with great approval and plenty of fantastic moments have come from it.

Some believe that it has lost some of its luster, however, and that having two matches every year is overkill. When Dolph Ziggler wins on Sunday, however, he will restore faith in one of WWE's marquee concepts.

The Money in the Bank ladder match used to be held yearly at WrestleMania, but people loved it so much that it became its own pay-per-view a couple years ago. The Money in the Bank events themselves have been fantastic, but there is a school of thought that Money in the Bank winners aren't receiving as much of a push as they once did.

That is understandable to some degree, but it has everything to do with the way the Money in the Bank winners are booked. It can be said that cashing in on a vulnerable opponent doesn't help a guy get over as a legitimate champion, but if everything before and after it is done correctly, then it should be a problem.

The prime example of a cash-in that failed was Alberto Del Rio. The Mexican aristocrat won RAW's Money in the Bank ladder match last year and successfully used the contract against CM Punk at SummerSlam. Once Del Rio won the title, however, he was booked weakly and never properly established himself as WWE Champion.

If the creative team takes care and does the right thing this year, however, Ziggler has a great opportunity to make Money in the Bank chic again.

Ziggler is clearly the heavy favorite in the World Heavyweight Championship contract Money in the Bank ladder match and it would be absolutely shocking if he didn't't come away with the briefcase on Sunday.

Ziggler is a sure-fire star who is going to be a successful world champion one day, regardless of whether or not he wins Money in the Bank. Ziggler is ready for a big push, though, so it should happen.

Ziggler has the perfect personality to earn the contract and carry it for an extended period of time because he has a cocky character and won't be afraid to take on all challengers.

It seems that guys who hang onto the briefcase for several months usually end up having better title reigns. The Miz and Daniel Bryan immediately come to mind as suitable examples. It would be great to see Ziggler keep the contract for six months or more and perhaps even be forced into defending it on a few occasions.

That would help get Ziggler over as someone who is capable hanging with the top-tier performers in the company. Even if he cashes in when the champ is down and out, Ziggler will still look good because he had to overcome adversity by putting the contract on the line. Then, once he wins the title, it will be vital to book him like a strong champion rather than a cowardly one.

If all of that is done, then Ziggler could conceivably be the most successful Money in the Bank winner, ever. You can see the excellence in Ziggler every time he steps into the ring, and that already puts him ahead of the game. As long as Ziggler's run with the briefcase isn't botched, though, Money in the Bank will be much better for it.

There is always a possibility that the WWE brass might give the Money in the Bank win to someone else, but since it is in such a fragile state as it is, that would be unwise. Ziggler is the guy they need carrying the mail right now, and if the WWE allows him to do so, then the company certainly won't regret it.
