SEC Media Days 2012: A Translation App for Media Days
You know college football is right around the corner when media days are beginning to take place. The SEC will have coaches and players being interviewed during July 17-19 in Hoover, Ala., and it should give us a little more insight during the upcoming college football season.
But with interviews come a lot of clichéd answers, and if we know anything about head coaches, it is that they don't want to say too much to create a story. Many coaches don't like the spotlight on their program when trying to prepare for a season and they certainly don't want to create any distractions.
So with media day less than a week away, here are some of the answers you might here, and the translation for what they really mean.
Looking Ahead
1 of 12When a coach says: We are going to take the schedule one game at a time.
He really means: Those games against Towson, North Texas and UAB are not keeping me up at night. I just can't let my players know that or we might suffer the upset of the century.
No Surprises
2 of 12When a coach says: We certainly won't be sneaking up on anybody this season.
He really means: We played better than we did in years past, so everybody else in the conference isn't so quick to put a victory on the calendar before we play this season.
Let's Play Already
3 of 12When a coach says: We are just trying to get better as a unit and as a team in general.
He really means: We are tired of practicing against each other to the point it is making us sick to our stomach. We know what we have to work with and it is time for September to get here.
We Need More Time!
4 of 12When a coach says: We are nowhere near where we want to be as a football team.
He really means: My team is looking great on paper and clicking on all cylinders. This is just what I say to keep that chip on my player's shoulders.
Dumb Questions
5 of 12When a coach says: This offseason has been very important because we have a bunch of new players, new coaches and a bunch of different things we are trying to do.
He really means: Every offseason is important because every season we have new players and what not. Next question!
We Need Depth
6 of 12When a coach says: So and so will have a chance to compete for a starting job.
He really means: The current starter has really been sucking it up and I refuse to let that be the case once again this season. I'm not so high on the backup, but at this point, anything is better than what we have right now.
Give Me 50
7 of 12When a coach says: We continue to practice hard and study film relentlessly; we are really doing anything to make sure our team doesn't get complacent.
He really means: This team better be hungry for more success, or there are going to be a lot more push-ups and jumping jacks in the middle of the week taking place.
What Do You Think?
8 of 12*What would make this season successful?*
When a coach says: Well, our goal is to win an SEC Championship and we are taking the necessary steps to do so.
He really means: Is there any other way to answer that type of question? I mean really, show me a coach that is fine with the GoDaddy.com Bowl.
I Don't Sleep
9 of 12*How much film have you watched of so and so?*
When a coach says: I have watched bits and pieces of certain games. Me and the team will get back into the film room later on and see any mismatches we can try and take advantage of.
He really means: Do you see these bags under my eyes? I can probably tell you more about that team than they can themselves.
See You in the Big Game
10 of 12When a coach says: When you bring good players around other good players, it creates competition, and that is what you want as a coach.
He really means: With the loaded team we have returning from last year and the stacked recruiting class coming in, I can't wait for the season to begin. We are going to take over the world. Well, at least the college football side of things.
He's a Good Kid
11 of 12When a coach says: He is a good kid. You know, he practices hard, he goes to class and just does everything right.
He really means: I hope all of that translates on the field. I need him to be a very productive player on the football field this season.
Tired of All These Questions
12 of 12When a coach says: I like our football team at the moment. We have a lot of depth in several areas, a lot of experience and we will hopefully put everything together and have a successful season.
He really means: Is football here yet? I'm tired of answering a lot of the same questions. I'm ready to get this thing started.
