NBA Free Agents 2012: Available Veterans Remaining Who Are Worth the Gamble

John RozumJun 7, 2018

The NBA offseason has been moving fast and the free-agent market alone is quite appealing. There are, however, some seasoned veterans who still remain and are worthy of strong consideration.

Point guard Baron Davis is a sound example.

With 13 years in the association and having produced good numbers each season, Davis would be a great addition to any starting lineup or rotation. He's also not alone regarding veterans who still have some balling left in the tank.

So, let's check out Davis and other veterans remaining who teams must provide with another opportunity.

Mike Bibby, PG

Mike Bibby may be 34 years old, but the man is still a reliable point guard in the rotation.

This past season, he only logged 14.3 minutes per game for the New York Knicks; however, Bibby dished out 2.1 assists and grabbed 1.5 boards as well. Definitely not impressive by any means, but rather efficient given the time on the court.

Plus, it was just last season when Bibby started all 20 playoff games for the Miami Heat in 2011. His production was not comparable to his previous NBA postseasons, but Bibby's experience certainly helped the Heat win the Eastern Conference.

Although he may only give a team 15-20 minutes (best-case scenario) a game, Bibby has the instincts and court awareness to keep any offense from slowing way down.

Kenyon Martin, PF

The big man from the Cincinnati Bearcats can still get it done. Kenyon Martin is 34 and still going strong in the paint after giving the Clippers 22.4 minutes in 42 appearances last season.

Also, Martin averaged 4.3 rebounds and 5.2 points to keep the Clippers effective through the rotation. In the postseason, Martin's role did reduce to 17.5 minutes, but he still accounted for 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 11 games.

Obviously, not close to his former regular or postseason production from the past, but Martin's reliable combination of rebounding and scoring boded well off the bench. Provided he's given another opportunity, the veteran forward will continue playing solid defense and scoring down low.

Matt Barnes, SF

Compared to the rest of the list, Matt Barnes is young at 32 years old. Still, the veteran has played on eight different teams in nine seasons and has been dependable each year.

Teams needing a bench player capable of contributing anywhere from either forward position or shooting guard must consider Barnes. His size benefits him at each position, and last season alone was arguably Barnes' best performance.

Starting 16 games of 63 played, Barnes averaged 7.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 22.9 minutes per contest for the Lakers. Unfortunately, his role was limited in the postseason, and Barnes averaged just 3.5 points and 3.3 boards per game.

Nonetheless, Barnes has been one of the more underrated bench players around. Gambling on him isn't a major risk since Barnes can provide the occasional start as well.

Baron Davis, PG

Baron Davis is 33 years old, but the 2011-12 NBA season was disappointing throughout. For the first time since his rookie season, Davis averaged less than 12 points and 25 minutes per game.

Davis has been one of the most reliable starters during his career and is just as good off the bench. During the 2010-11 season, Davis logged 27.4 minutes between the Clippers and Cavaliers, with 13.3 points and 6.5 assists per game.

Whether he's put in a starting role or restricted to the rotation, Davis has proven he has the ability to score, dish the rock, get turnovers and knock down from anywhere on the floor. Provided he goes to a team that wants him on the court, Davis' consistency will pay the most dividends.
