Before last weekend, the Princeton Tigers (4-2, 9-10) were perfect in Ivy play and were on a seven-game win streak (including a takedown of Ivy-best Cornell). But they saw all of that come to a blistering halt last weekend when they lost twice on the road—to Yale by 12 and to Brown by 18.
Penn (3-3, 7-13) had the opposite story last weekend with the same players—they won twice on the road, at Brown by 21 and at Yale by five. These were only their second and third conference wins, but they have also only played six Ivy games (most of the league has played eight).
The key to the Quaker offense is its sophomore trio—Tyler Bernardini, Jack Eggleston, and Harrison Gaines. Between the three of them, they average 34 of Penn's 67 points per game, and their team play has improved as the season has progressed.
The Tigers rely on freshman guard Doug Davis to do the offensive heavy lifting, although he has been struggling in conference play. While he averages 12.3 PPG on the season, he's averaged only 9.5 in Ivy play.
The Quakers have had the tougher schedule to date, and the experience of facing ranked opponents will help them down the stretch (they played UNC in their season opener and lost to Villanova at the beginning of December). While wins over ranked teams would have done wonders for their self-esteem, the experience is ultimately going to help them. They started the season 1-7 and have since gone 6-6.
Before the calendar turned over, the Tigers went 2-8. Since then, they have seen their play improve as well—they are 7-2 in 2009.
This should be a good Ivy game to keep your eye on. A win for Princeton solidifies their second-place standing in the league, while a win for Penn will put them in a tie for third (with Princeton) in the standings.
