2012 NBA Free Agency: Best Bargains Still Available on the Market
At this point in the free-agency moratorium, most of the elite options are off the boards and have committed to teams for the 2012-13 NBA season.
Now, it's all about finding the bargains.
These are the players who can be had for a relatively cheap price that will make other teams regret that they didn't do more to acquire their services.
Here are the nine best bargains left on the NBA free-agent market.
Jonny Flynn
1 of 8Last Team: Portland Trail Blazers
Position: PG
Age: 23
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 4.5 points, 3.3 assists, 1.3 rebounds
Jonny Flynn started 81 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves during his rookie season in 2009-2010, but his playing time and performance have taken a nosedive since then.
With that being said, Flynn is only 23 years old and could benefit from a fresh start on a new team.
A shoot-first floor general who doesn't always make the best decisions, Flynn probably isn't going to become a reliable starter ever again. However, he can be a capable backup as long as he starts picking and choosing his shots better to avoid a third-straight season shooting below 40 percent from the field.
Flynn is cheap enough that he will end up being a bargain once he settles into the right role.
Terrence Williams
2 of 8Last Team: Sacramento Kings
Position: SG/SF
Age: 25
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 7.1 points, 2.2 assists, 3.4 rebounds
Terrence Williams was one of my favorite prospects when he was coming out of Louisville, but he has been a massive letdown since he entered the NBA.
The high-flying and versatile forward has already changed teams four times in three years and has yet to prove himself at the next level. A lack of continuity could be at the heart of this issue.
Given an opportunity—Williams has started just nine games since entering the Association—and an ability to actually get comfortable in a well-run system, this athletic swingman could blossom.
Shannon Brown
3 of 8Last Team: Phoenix Suns
Position: SG
Age: 26
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 11.0 points, 1.2 assists, 2.7 rebounds
An insane athlete, Shannon Brown is still working on the difficult transition from being an athlete who plays basketball to a basketball player who has great athleticism.
Brown put up the best numbers of his career last season with the Phoenix Suns, but there's still a lot of room for improvement for this undersized shooting guard.
A great finisher in transition, Brown's primary asset right now is his defensive play. He is capable of being a true shutdown perimeter defender when he wants to be.
Jerryd Bayless
4 of 8Last Team: Toronto Raptors
Position: PG
Age: 23
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 11.4 points, 3.8 assists, 2.1 rebounds
A talented player who has been left without a starting job for several years because of Jose Calderon, Jerryd Bayless has the potential to blossom into a successful starting point guard sooner rather than later.
While he is a shoot-first guard, his passing skills are well above average, and he will do just fine if he is asked to distribute the rock more consistently.
Bayless still needs to work on his defense, but his offensive game should eventually earn him a shot at a larger role.
Carl Landry
5 of 8Last Team: New Orleans Hornets
Position: PF
Age: 28
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 0.3 blocks
Hard-working players like Carl Landry are always loved by the teams that they join—especially after signing bargain basement contracts.
Landry is a player who thrives outside of the spotlight thanks to his gritty, physical style of play. The power forward might not throw down highlight-reel dunks, but he gets the job done in every way that he can.
If there was a stat that looked at the ratio of PER to name recognition (assuming we could quantify the latter), Landry's would be pretty high after his 18.31 PER season with the New Orleans Hornets.
Aaron Brooks
6 of 8Last Team: Phoenix Suns
Position: PG
Age: 27
2010-2011 Per Game Stats: 10.7 points, 3.9 assists, 1.3 rebounds
Aaron Brooks has been largely forgotten thanks to spending the lockout-shortened season in China playing for the Guangdong Southern Tigers.
The 2010 NBA Most Improved Player looked sharp while playing abroad, even dropping a 40-spot in a blowout win over Tianjin Ronggang.
Brooks' game appeared to drop off a bit after his MIP campaign, but that was largely due to an injury and lack of playing time with the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns.
If he can utilize his quickness and focus on involving his teammates on the offensive end, he will find success once more.
Raymond Felton
7 of 8Last Team: Portland Trail Blazers
Position: PG
Age: 28
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 11.4 points, 6.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds
Raymond Felton's season took a turn for the worst when he and Jamal Crawford decided that they didn't really want to be playing for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Although he can border on overweight at times, Felton is a relatively young point guard who plays well on both ends of the court. While his passing garners the most attention, his defense is actually one of his better attributes as long as his motor is running on full.
Felton needs to be motivated in order to succeed, but he is a great talent with the proper coaching in place.
Courtney Lee
8 of 8Last Team: Houston Rockets
Position: SG
Age: 26
2011-2012 Per Game Stats: 11.4 points, 1.5 assists, 2.7 rebounds
Although he sometimes shies away from contact and doesn't dribble the ball particularly well, Courtney Lee is an athletic 2-guard who can hit outside shots and play great defense.
His development has been blocked by Kevin Martin for the last two years, but he is ready for a shot at a starting role once again.
As a starter last season while Martin was sidelined, Lee averaged 14.0 points, 1.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game.
