Destination X 2012: Continuing the Phoenix Rise of TNA Wrestling

Chris FeatherstoneJul 8, 2012

The 2012 Destination X pay-per-view continued an unprecedented era of TNA Wrestling.

Like most of the PPVs this year, TNA has given the fans some intense action, with very little to criticize. Destination X brought us the first reign of two champions.

Zema Ion continued his decent heel push to win his first X Division Championship during the Ultimate X match. Although the match was slightly below average, Ion winning the title was a good decision—especially since earlier in the evening, Jesse Sorenson returned from a near-career threatening neck injury due to a botched moonsault from Ion five months ago.

Seemingly, the X Division will be centered around Ion for a considerable amount of time while Sorenson fully recovers to continue their rivalry.

The other title that changed hands was the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

Just one year ago, Austin Aries was vying to regain his spot in TNA after a four-year absence—primarily competing in ROH.

Fast-forwarding to Sunday evening, Bobby Roode's record-setting eight-month TNA World Championship reign was ended, as Aries captured the title for the first time in his 12-year pro wrestling career.

This year, TNA has made exponential improvements in the booking, television shows, and overall excitement as a whole.

Whether the cause is Vince Russo no longer booking, Hogan and Bischoff no longer being the centerpieces of nearly every TV program, or a genuine interest in pushing homegrown talent, TNA has experienced one of the best years since its inception in 2002.

Hopefully, TNA keeps the fire burning and shortens the gap between it and the WWE. Of course, it will not be the No. 1 show anytime soon, but at least the rising Phoenix of the current product can spread its wings and soar, gaining more and more exposure along the way.
