2012 Home Run Derby Contestants: Top Contenders to Dethrone Robinson Cano

Austin GreenJun 7, 2018

Robinson Cano won the 2011 MLB Home Run Derby, but the Yankees' powerful second baseman will have some stiff competition in this year's event.

Both the American League and National League squads are loaded with sluggers who can catch fire at any moment. From seasoned Derby vets to first-timers looking to make a splash, there are plenty of contestants who can dethrone Cano.

The following players are the top contenders to pull off such a feat.

Prince Fielder

The Detroit Tigers slugger is my pick to win it all, just as he did in 2009.

At 275 pounds, Fielder is practically built for this contest. He has incredible power, and with his smooth swing and perfect timing, he's a threat to go yard whenever he picks up the bat.

Fielder skipped the event in 2010, and after a disappointing performance in 2011, he should be hungry to get back on top.

Jose Bautista

Jose Bautista struggled in his first Home Run Derby, cranking just four homers in 2011. Now that he's acclimated to the event, though, I'm expecting a big performance from Bautista this time around.

He's been crushing pitchers in the first half of this season, blasting 27 homers in 295 at bats. He's tied with Josh Hamilton for most home runs in the MLB, and seeing as how the Derby is basically glorified batting practice, he should have no problem getting balls over the fence.

Mark Trumbo

Trumbo is participating in his first Home Run Derby, but he's a dark horse candidate to win it all.

The 26-year-old right fielder is one of the best young power hitters in the game. He's currently tied for seventh the MLB with 22 home runs in just 288 at bats.

He could be a little nervous in his first outing, but if the 6'4", 220-pound Trumbo finds a rhythm, he's capable of blowing away the competition.
