Bryce Harper: Washington Nationals' Rookie Doesn't Deserve All-Star Nod

Michael BroughtonJun 1, 2018

Although he hasn't been around long, the Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper is one of the most hyped players in all of Major League Baseball. He's already shown his great skills and potential, but it is obvious he still has room to grow.

However, the rookie phenom has managed to squeeze his way into the All-Star game, following the disappointing news that Giancarlo Stanton will need knee surgery, according to Yahoo! Sports' David Brown.

There are many reasons why I don't believe he is deserving of a once-illustrious honor. What follows are four of them.

Wins Above Replacement

Wins above replacement (WAR) is often used as a way to analyze a players' overall value. It measures how many wins a player adds to his team.

According the baseball-reference.com, Harper's WAR is 1.5, which the website values as a reserve-type player. Aaron Hill, who missed out on this year's All-Star game, has a WAR of 2.2, which is valued as an everyday starter.

Overall Production

While Harper's numbers are pretty solid, they aren't All-Star-caliber numbers. He currently holds a .283 average with eight home runs, 25 RBI and eight steals.

Granted, he missed the early part of the season, but nothing can be done about that.

Subpar Fielding

Harper has five errors in the outfield this season. He only trails Giancarlo Stanton and Will Venable in errors in the National League.

Outfield isn't technically his natural position, but being third worst is telling. There are plenty of other guys who have proved they can do their job both at the plate and in the field.

There Are Other Guys Deserving

Matt Holliday, Aaron Hill and Martin Prado all have considerably better stats than Harper. They have all also played nearly the entire season.

Though none of them are considered "superstars," each one has proven themselves worthy of the nod.

Harper has a bright future, but I believe he was named an All-Star this year because of his reputation.

This is a debatable topic, so feel free to share your feelings by commenting. Do you think Harper should have made it in? If not, who do you think should have taken the spot?
