NBA Free Agents 2012: Savvy Moves to Help Struggling Teams

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

For NBA teams struggling in free agency, such as the Dallas Mavericks, there are still quality players available on the free-agent market that can make impacts next season.

There are several veteran players who still haven't found teams for next year and could provide some extra depth for contending teams.

Let's look at some savvy moves that could help teams that are finding it difficult to make additions through free agency.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks have been the biggest losers of free agency thus far. They were not able to sign Deron Williams, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and a number of other players that would have helped them make another deep run in the playoffs.

Owner Mark Cuban would be wise to save his salary cap room for next summer, but if he has the desire to spend money now, he does have some options.

Elton Brand will reportedly be amnestied by the Philadelphia 76ers, and he would be a fantastic fit in Dallas:

"

The 76ers have decided to use the amnesty clause on Elton Brand and the $18M left on final year of his deal, league sources tell Y! Sports.

He could help superstar forward Dirk Nowitzki stay fresh throughout the season by being able to provide a quality backup for the German big man.

The Mavericks need some more depth in the front court, and Brand can give Dallas some offense and veteran leadership.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs have been quiet in free agency thus far, and they need to make some moves because a few of their Western Conference rivals, such as the Los Angeles Lakers, have improved in the offseason.

One player that makes a lot of sense for the Spurs is Lou Williams, who said via Twitter that he won't return to the Philadelphia 76ers next season:

"

Philly, I appreciate you all. Unfortunately I will not be coming back, as an organization they decided to move in a different direction.

Williams could provide the Spurs with consistent offense off the bench, and also has a tremendous amount of athleticism. San Antonio would be smart to sign a young player with a bright future ahead of him like Williams.

Chicago Bulls

The Bulls will be a determined team next year when Derrick Rose returns to the court after suffering a torn ACL in the first round of the 2012 playoffs.

There are a couple players that would be good fits on the Bulls roster.

Former first-round pick Gerald Green would be a solid addition for more scoring depth at shooting guard.

Marcus Camby would also be a great fit in Chicago, because he would give the team a good backup for young center Joakim Noah, who battled an injury in the playoffs.
