Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns Must Reel Ricky Seals-Jones Back In
There's a chance that the Texas Longhorns may have the opportunity to bring their former 5-star wideout commit Ricky Seals-Jones back into the fold.
For a while, it looked as if the Longhorns had gotten a huge commit from the Sealy, Texas, receiver, but that all fell apart back in June when Seals-Jones decided to decommit.
Seals-Jones now finds himself as one of the most sought-after non-commited players in the country, and he's currently at Nike's recruiting event, The Opening, in Oregon. While this would seem like the end of the story for Longhorns fans, there is some hopeful news coming out of The Opening.
According to ESPN's Recruiting Nation day one notes, the Longhorns are still on the wideout's radar:
""Right now, it's all jumbled," Seals-Jones said. "I'm just taking it slow and doing what's best for me. All those schools have the offenses I want to be a part of."
Seals-Jones doesn't have a timetable for his announcement, but he did say the Longhorns are still a strong contender in the recruiting process. Following The Opening, he plans on doing research on all of the programs from an athletic and academic perspective.
"
The report also states that Seals-Jones wants to play for a "pass happy" football program and have the option of being a dual-sport athlete. Finally, via the ESPN report, the other programs still in the mix are Texas A&M, Baylor, LSU, Oregon and UCLA.
Now, that's a lot of information to take in, so let's break it down from the Longhorns' perspective.
Obviously having a player of his caliber in the football program would be a huge boost, so Texas needs to try to get him back. From the information we have here, it's going to take a little bit of giving in.
If he really wants to play both basketball and football, the Longhorns should let him. I mean, they have a good basketball program—I seem to remember a guy named Kevin Durant—and maybe, just maybe, he's the next great two-sport athlete.
Or maybe he realizes how tough it is to truly feature in two sports in college. Either way, you'll have him on the football field.
At 6'5", 220 pounds, he's an incredible target for Mack Brown and the football program, and when you add him to a 2013 class that already features two 4-star receivers and a 5-star stud quarterback in Tyrone Swoopes, his dream of a pass-happy offense could become a reality at Texas.
Admittedly, I think of Texas as more of a running team at the moment, but if it can coach up Swoopes, continue to build a solid rushing attack and bring in a plethora of talent at wideout, I can only imagine that Brown wouldn't mind opening up the playbook a bit to fit his talent.
The long and short of it for Texas is that it still has a chance to bring in an incredibly talented wide receiver and athlete. He's already committed once, so we know the interest is there. We also now know that the Longhorns are still under consideration.
They need to do everything they can to reel Seals-Jones back in.
