Where Do the Oakland Raiders Go from Here?

steve markowitzFeb 16, 2009

Well, the offseason is just about underway and the Raiders are set with their coaching staff. Tom Cable took over last season, fired Lane Kiffin, and was pretty inconsistent to say the least.  He played great offense and defense one week, then got shut out the next.

Yes, the Raiders did play good football the last two weeks. But let's not forget, this is still the coach who got shut out against Atlanta and also embarrassed the team on national television at San Diego.

So now the question is, what team will the Raiders bring next season? Will it be the same woeful play from the last six seasons? Or will Tom Cable be true to his words and restore the Raiders' winning ways?

"The Oakland Raiders are back. They're back. We're going to go win football games and we're going to be a playoff team," Cable said.  "I'm not afraid to say that. All that negative, it's done. It's our time now."

Easier said than done, Mr. Cable.

The Raiders have many holes on offense and defense, but especially on offense. JaMarcus Russell is improving, but he still needs a star wideout to connect with on the deep ball. Javon Walker was brought on to be that star last season, but it never worked out.

Now there are rumors around the NFL saying that Al Davis is looking to trade for Cowboys star-wideout Terrell Owens. Remember, this is the man who said, "There is no 'I' in team, but there is a 'ME' in team." Trading for Owens is without question a big risk, but it may be a risk worth taking. Russell needs weapons!

As for the draft, the Raiders should go OT—maybe Andre Smith.

But the question from all of this is, can Tom Cable continue the success he started at the end of the season last year?

That remains to be answered, but we will all find out in September.
