Can Man United Do the Fabulous Five?

Rayed MamunFeb 16, 2009

Manchester United has always been a successful football team, achieving many amazing accolades over the years.  Their finest hour was arguably in 1999 when they completed “The Treble”, the unique achievement of winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup all in the same season. Many would be forgiven to think that this feat is almost impossible and will not happen again. This season however, could not only see The Treble all over again, but potentially an unprecedented Quintuple!

That’s right, Man United are still in the running for five trophies this season and they have a realistic chance of winning the remaining four on offer, now that they’ve locked away the World Club Championship. Let’s have a look at their chances in each of the four remaining titles.

Just yesterday we saw an understrength Man United hammer Derby County 4-1 to progress to the  quarter finals. With such strength in depth they look a formidable force. With Liverpool out and London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea having poor seasons it is easy to see why the Red Devils are the favourites for the FA Cup.

It is fair to say that Man United will win the Premier League this year. Their London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have been an absolute shambles this year and are pretty much out of the running. The only realistic challenger is Liverpool. Although Liverpool is only two points behind, Man United do have a game in hand and have been much more consistent than Liverpool this year. Even if Liverpool manage to beat Man United next month, it may not be enough, such is the inconsistency down at Merseyside.

United are in the Carling Cup final to face Tottenham. Needless to say they will be the favourites there.

It is obvious though that the Champions League will be the toughest trophy for the Red Devils this year. There is some stiff competition this time around. The likes of Barcelona and Inter are looking even better than Man United in their respective leagues this year. The big problem is that Man United is playing Inter later this month in the round of sixteen, in a fixture that I think could go either way. They are the defending champions however, and there is no reason to suggest that they can’t do it again, the quality is there no doubt.

The Red Devils had a wonderful year last year and look set to do even better this year. Can they win complete a Fantastic Five? Maybe, the biggest doubt is hinging on the mouthwatering fixture with Inter later this month. It should be an epic two legs, and I cannot wait.
