Top 10 Transfer Bargains and Where They'll Go

Charlie MelmanMay 31, 2018

Everyone likes a good bargain.

One of the most satisfying things in football is seeing your club make a cheap or unheralded signing and seeing him blossom far beyond anyone's expectations.

If you look hard enough, you can find some talents in football that, due to certain circumstances, can transfer for a relatively low price and make a lot of fiscal sense for the clubs interested in them.

As oil-rich clubs like Manchester City flood the market with their petro-dollars, it's more important than ever to find good bargains in the transfer market.

Here are the top 10 and where they might go.

Junior Hoilett to Sunderland

1 of 10

It's not often that a player with Hoilett's talent and vast potential is available for absolutely no transfer fee, but the Canadian winger is a free agent after Blackburn's relegation from the Premier League.

For a team like Sunderland that does not want to spend a lot of money this summer, Hoilett would be perfect as a direct, pacy winger who can cause a great deal of havoc on his day.

While some bigger clubs like Arsenal have been mentioned as potential suitors in the past, Hoilett should work his way up the Premier League and develop a little more before securing a move to a Champions League club, which he very well might do in the future.

Salomon Kalou to Liverpool

2 of 10

For someone who has a ton of experience with one of Europe's top clubs and is moving into the prime of his career, Salomon Kalou is criminally underrated.

He can be deployed in almost any forward role you can conceive of, and that uncommon versatility cannot be undervalued.

What makes Kalou even more valuable is the fact that he is available for absolutely nothing, and Liverpool could add some needed depth to their core of strikers without any significant financial hit.

Mathieu Debuchy to Newcastle

3 of 10

This move has been in the works for some time, and after Debuchy's impressive showing for France at Euro 2012, it makes even more sense.

The defensively solid right back would only cost Newcastle in the region of £5 to 7 million, and would add to the collection of Toon players who have Ligue 1 experience.

For that relatively inexpensive price, Newcastle would get one of the most consistent right-backs in France with international experience.

John Guidetti to Fiorentina

4 of 10

It's too bad that Manchester City's youth academy basically exists for show, because John Guidetti is one of its jewels and could make a real impact in the Premier League.

After scoring 20 goals in 23 appearances for Feyenoord last season, the youngster can be assured of a transfer away from the club, and it is one that he richly deserves.

Fiorentina have reportedly taken an interest in the striker, and his relationship with their sporting director could play a decisive factor in engineering a move.

If they do pull it off, the Italian club will have a fantastic yet overlooked talent on their hands.

Fernando Gago to Manchester City

5 of 10

Fernando Gago needs to sort out his club situation this summer one way or another, because he is not doing himself any favors by remaining without a permanent home.

After Roma failed to exercise their option to purchase the defensive midfielder, it makes sense that Real Madrid are offering him to other clubs for a relatively small transfer fee to drum up some interest in the player who should be entering the prime of his career.

It seems that Manchester City never stop having a need for decent defensive midfield reinforcements after seeing David Pizarro and Owen Hargreaves come and go in the last year. Perhaps Gago is a low-cost solution for the Citizens, not that they have to worry about the cost.

Emmanuel Adebayor to Tottenham

6 of 10

After a fantastic season on loan at Tottenham, it would only be appropriate for Manchester City forward Emmanuel Adebayor to make his move to White Hart Lane permanent.

The stumbling blocks, however, are the striker's transfer fee and what are sure to be sizable wage demands, considering what he was earning at City.

While any other club would have to worry about recuperating some of what they paid for an outgoing player, the Sky Blues have none of those concerns, except with regards to pride.

Expect to see Adebayor leading Tottenham's line again next season with aplomb.

Nicklas Bendtner to Malaga

7 of 10

He might not be the greatest striker in the world, as his ego would lead him to believe, but Nicklas Bendtner has been a pretty good goalscorer for his club teams and especially Denmark.

After a very productive Euro 2012, he figures to get his pick of several clubs as Arsenal shop him around this summer, and a move to Malaga makes the most sense for a player who wants to play at the top level.

Not only will the Spanish club be able to pay Bendtner the sort of wages commensurate with his lofty self-valuation, he will be able to play Champions League football as well.

Clint Dempsey to Liverpool

8 of 10

If Clint Dempsey were playing for Liverpool last season, you'd assume that the Reds would not have been so anemic in front of goal.

Surely an tenacious winger or attacking midfielder or striker would have been better than the likes of Stewart Downing sauntering up and down the flanks for Liverpool.

Now that man is available in Clint Dempsey, one of the Premier League's top scorers and a great value at around £10 million. His ambition is to play Champions League football, and if he can't engineer a move to one of the top four clubs, Liverpool wouldn't be a bad alternative.

Like his countryman Landon Donovan has done in the blue half of Merseyside, Dempsey would quickly become a fan favorite if he were to make the move to Anfield.

Jan Vertonghen to Tottenham

9 of 10

Should Tottenham ultimately pull off a move for Vertonghen, it will quickly look like one of their smartest purchases in years.

With a very frail back line and some obvious depth issues, the Belgian is the perfect solution to what ails Spurs' defence.

He can play at left back and in defensive midfield in addition to his native center-back, and his unusual proficiency with the ball at his feet will appeal to Andre Villas-Boas.

Crafted in much the same mold as Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen, Vertonghen could prove to be one of Tottenham's most valuable players.

Robin van Persie to Manchester City

10 of 10

Robin van Persie will certainly be the most expensive player on this list, but his inflammatory statement issued the other day will force his price down because everyone now knows that Arsenal have no choice but to sell.

He's burned his bridges publicly and told everyone else that there is only one direction he can go, whether it be this summer or on a free transfer next year.

Arsenal will want to at least get something for their best player while they can, and Manchester City is one of the only clubs in the world that can pull out £25 million at will to buy a player it wants.

There is a small chance that Juventus or another foreign club will emerge as a suitor, but the trend of Arsenal players departing for the Etihad Stadium is very likely to continue. And, frustratingly for Arsenal fans, City will be getting an undue bargain for the club captain.
