Tottenham Transfer News: 5 Things to Expect from AVB over His First Few Weeks
With Andre Villas-Boas' appointment as Tottenham's new manager now a done deal, it's time to look ahead to his first acts in charge of the club.
After all, it is in his transfer moves (and certainly not his man managing) that AVB has made his mark on the football world.
As he has reportedly been given around 70 million pounds to work with, Villas-Boas should be able to make a splash this summer.
The next few months are set to be an intriguing start for Spurs fans, but these first few weeks should be especially so.
Here are five things to expect AVB to do immediately at White Hart Lane.
Say Goodbye to Modric
1 of 5There is no doubt that, in a vacuum, Tottenham will want to keep Luka Modric.
However, with his desire to leave the club now over a year old, it's time to let the little Croat go.
Last year, AVB's tenure at Chelsea was undermined by some players' lack of desire to play for their manager.
While that was clearly more of the manager's fault in that case, I doubt Villas-Boas will be happy taking any chance at a repeat of his time at Stamford Bridge, even for a player he so coveted in the transfer window last year.
In fact, reports are already beginning about AVB's willingness to let him go.
Start saying your goodbyes now, Spurs supporters.
Find a Replacement or Two for Modric
2 of 5AVB has many options open to him in the search to replace Modric, but chances are, he will go for a few players to try to fill the hole left by the playmaker.
Icelander Gylfi Sigurðsson looks set to be Villas-Boas' first signing, paving the way to Modric's exit. Sigurðsson could be a replacement for Modric, but is probably closer to a replacement for the likely to leave Rafael van der Vaart.
Additionally, Spurs are reportedly after 20-year-old Brazilian Oscar, a young midfielder who would be a perfect fit in Modric's place.
Finally, if Modric ends up going to Real Madrid, there has been talk of a swap between Spurs and Los Blancos, with Nuri Sahin coming to the Lane. Apparently, the Turkish midfielder turned down such a move just yesterday, but AVB may just try to make it happen.
Bring in His Old Players
3 of 5As with every new manager with successful pasts, AVB will try to get some of his old players to come along with him to his new club.
Porto's João Moutinho made waves at Euro 2012 in his performances with Portugal. He may just be ready to move on to a new club and had some very positive words about Villas-Boas just a few days ago. However, his links to Manchester United may make it difficult to lure him to the Lane.
Tottenham have reportedly already offered Chelsea 10 million pounds for striker Daniel Sturridge, who AVB managed at Stamford Bridge last season.
Even Chelsea's Raul Meireles is an outside candidate, as he has apparently been unhappy and looking for the exit since AVB was fired in March. He has been linked to a move to Napoli and hasn't had much of a solid link to Spurs, but perhaps the appointment of AVB will change that. After all, it was Villas-Boas who signed him to the Blues on deadline day last year.
Shore Up the Back by Reducing Its Age
4 of 5One of the first things AVB must address is the back for Tottenham.
Centre-backs Ledley King and William Gallas are far past their prime, yet are relied upon as weekly starters.
Villas-Boas will have to get the deal for Ajax man Jan Vertonghen done as soon as possible, then maybe go after even another defender.
Goalkeeper is another position that needs this treatment, as 31-year-old Heurelhmo Gomes is shockingly the youngest of Spurs' three keepers by seven years.
Expect AVB to go after a young keeper. Hugo Lloris's name has been thrown around, but a slightly lower price tag for a keeper to develop might be enticing.
Add More Threats in Attack
5 of 5With Rafael van der Vaart, Luka Modric and Giovani dos Santos set to leave while Emmanuel Adebayor is gone back from loan and Louis Saha had his contract expire, Spurs are in desperate need of some new faces in attack.
In fact, they have only one forward whose future not completely in doubt, and that is Jermain Defoe.
They have already made their intentions clear for budding Russian superstar Alan Dzagoev, who impressed mightily with three goals in Euro 2012.
Additionally, Tottenham have been pursuing Brazilian striker Leandro Damiao for the past several months.
There is also still a chance Spurs could attempt to retain the services of Emmanuel Adebayor, who has made it clear that he wants to stay at the Lane.
Add into all of this the attempts that are to be made at Sturridge, Moutinho, Oscar and Sigurdsson, and there are an incredible amount of options for AVB to choose from.
