Kerry Collins: Titans Not Likely to Resign

John EdwardsFeb 15, 2009

With only 13 days left before Kerry Collins hits the open market as an unrestricted free agent, it is very unlikely that the Titans will offer him a new contract.

Almost no progress has been made so far, according to Kerry Collins' agent. Collins seems frustrated, and believes that he is worth much more than the Titans want to pay him.

"Hopefully in the next couple of weeks they'll start getting a little more serious and throw some real numbers around," said Collins' agent.

These real numbers, however, are much much more than the Titans want to offer him.

Current estimates state that Kerry Collins wants a deal that is equal in value to the one Vince Young signed with the Titans as a rookie. This translates roughly into Collins receiving around a $7 million-a-year contract for multiple years.

The Titans, and most other GMs around the league, believe this amount of money is just too much for a 36-year-old quarterback who only threw 12 TDs all year.

To compare this with the rest of the league, Kurt Warner threw 30 regular season touchdowns, not to mention the countless postseason ones. Warner is expected to sign a deal for less than $4.5 million a year. Given the fact that Warner threw over three times as many touchdowns, and for twice as many yard as Collins, it seems a no-brainer that Tennessee will not pay Collins what he wants.

The need for a veteran signal caller from other teams is very high this offseason, with almost no superstar quarterback prospects coming out in the draft. Many teams in free agency, sadly, would give Collins the lucrative contract he wants in hope of making a Super Bowl run.

Current teams that could decide to pay Collins would be the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Bears, Vikings, Buccaneers, Jets, and the 49ers. With Kerry Collins being the premiere free agent quarterback, if Kurt Warner gets a new deal worked out with the Cardinals, which is very likely to happen, Collins will see interest from any team in the market for a quarterback.

Due to the fact that Collins wants one more large paycheck before retirement, and the Titans have a quarterback who is perfectly capable of starting for many NFL teams in Vince Young, it seems very logical that Collins will be released by the Titans.
