Premier League: Last Year's Transfer Busts Ready to Explode This Upcoming Season

Greg ProbertJun 7, 2018

The Premier League has become famous for its huge money transfers in recent years, and last year was no different.

From last January's deadline day dramatics all the way up to this January's window, there has been money spent by almost every club in the league.

Some players adapted to the league quickly and stamped their authority on the English game, and some players didn't have the best of times.

But what players are set to come out of their shell this season after a torrid time last year?

Steven Pienaar

During his time at Everton, Steven Pienaar really impressed.

So much so that in January last year, he began a bidding war between Tottenham and Chelsea, with Spurs eventually capturing his signature.

He didn't have the best of times at Spurs, but this wasn't down to a lack of form as such. Injuries and competition for a place in Spurs' midfield kept him out of the side.

Having made just 10 appearances for Tottenham, he was loaned back to Everton earlier this year.

This stirred something in Pienaar and he returned to his best very quickly.

David Moyes and the Everton fans have shown their desire to have him back at the club on a permanent basis.

Should new Spurs' manager Andre Villas-Boas decide to sell Pienaar back to Everton, then we can expect to see him shine once again in Everton blue.

Charles N'Zogbia

In July of last year, Aston Villa signed Charles N'Zogbia from Wigan Athletic after two failed attempts.

He cost the Midlands club £9.5 million and was expected to bring his form at Wigan to Villa Park.

Things didn't quite go to plan, and he took a while to settle down, He wasn't playing at his usual fast pace and his deliveries weren't up to scratch.

During his first season, his goal return was poor, scoring only twice, but his performances did pick up towards the end of the season.

N'Zogbia is a very talented footballer, and on his day he can be a nightmare for defenders to deal with.

If he can keep his place in the side and regain some confidence, then he could fire Villa to a place in the league they are more comfortable with.

Bobby Zamora

To sum up Zamora's time at QPR is quite simple: He scored on his debut, then not much else.

After an impressive few years at Fulham which saw him earn two England caps, QPR splashed £5 million to bring him to Loftus Road.

The strong and powerful target-man looked to be a good purchase as he scored on his debut, but we didn't see much more from him in a QPR shirt.

But if Zamora gets service, he will score, so with QPR narrowly staying up last season, they will want to rebuild.

This may include a plan on how to get Zamora on the ball more often. If they can achieve this, then Zamora will repay them with goals.

Fernando Torres

Surely next season has got to be a good one for Torres?

His form since joining the Blues has become a worldwide joke, with goals from the Spaniard being an extreme rarity.

After his £50 million transfer from Liverpool, Chelsea fans were looking forward to seeing Torres fire Chelsea to Premier League glory.

Needless to say, this didn't happen, and he went through one of the lowest points of his playing career.

The 2011-2012 season didn't start much better, although his all-around play had looked to improve somewhat.

The second half of last season was a different story. Torres looked a threat and had recovered his pace, desire and scoring boots.

Following his impressive end to last season and his golden boot at Euro 2012, you have to expect Torres to start playing to his full potential next season.

Andy Carroll

After the sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea, Liverpool immediately went and splashed £35 million pounds on Andy Carroll.

This was seen as somewhat of a "panic buy." Considering that Carroll had no real Premier League experience, it looked as if Liverpool spent the money just because they had it.

After his move from Newcastle, Carroll was expected to show his worth straight away, but this was not to be.

He had a very up and down first half-season at Anfield, and questions were already being asked about his credentials as a top-flight player.

His 2011-2012 campaign got off to a similar start, with goals coming few and far between, even in games where he looked dangerous.

As the season progressed he finally looked to be settling down, following a similar pattern to Torres, the man he replaced.

After looking like one of the better players in England's Euro 2012 campaign, Carroll will hope to get a good preseason under his belt and push on to next season and perform like he knows he can.
