NHL Free Agency 2012: Carey Price Signs 6-Year Deal with Montreal Canadiens

Eric McKelvieJul 3, 2012

Carey Price has signed a six-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens. Marc Bergevin made the announcement Monday, but financial terms were not officially disclosed at that time because of team policy.

However, TSN is reporting that the contract is worth $39 million, which means Price would make $6.5 million per season, on average.

The Canadiens are the only NHL team Price has played for, and this contract means he will continue to suit up for the Habs through the 2017-18 NHL season.

The Canadiens selected Price fifth overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. In five seasons with the Habs, the 24-year-old B.C. native has compiled a 124-104-35 record in 271 games. Price has 16 career shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.56 and a save percentage of .916.

Price was a part of the 2010 Canadiens team that made it all the way to the conference finals as an eighth seed; however, it was Jaroslav Halak who carried the team in goal.

Following the 2010 playoffs, both goaltenders became restricted free agents. The controversial decision was made to make Price the No. 1 goaltender in Montreal and trade Halak to the St. Louis Blues.

The Canadiens finished dead last in the Eastern Conference in 2012, but Price wasn’t to blame. He finished with a 26-28-11 record, registered four shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.43 and a .916 save percentage.

Price also won his third Molson Cup and competed in his third NHL All-Star game in 2012.
