US Olympic Trials 2012: Monday Event Schedule, TV Info and More

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Dara Torres is back, again.

The 45-year-old U.S. Olympic legend has qualified for yet another final trial event—the women’s 50-meter freestyle. She headlines the July 2 competition after Sunday night’s conclusion of gymnastics and track and field competition left just two swimming events for Monday.

Rachel Blount of the Star Tribune reported that Torres reminisced about her career following her semifinal race:

"

It’s a totally different approach than I had when I was 17, at my first Olympics. It’s much tougher. People said I was middle-aged at 41, but I’m really, really middle-aged now.

When I look back on all the medals I’ve won, that’s not the great part about it. The great part about it is staying in for so long. My mindset, my mentality, has changed over the years. I appreciate it so much more now, what it takes to be an elite athlete.

"

If Torres qualifies, she’d be on her way to her sixth Olympic games.

While the women’s 50-meter freestyle features wisdom, the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle highlights youth. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, 21-year-old University of Georgia junior Andrew Gemmell recorded the fastest time in Sunday’s heats and will be the top seed in today’s finals. He said after the win:

"

I just wanted to have a good swim. I wanted to make sure I was able to get back to the finals and not be on the outside looking in. I thought this would be a good dress rehearsal to work on the same things I need to work on (Monday) night. I’m glad I put myself in a good spot. Making the team, that’s the goal.

"
