TNA Has Become The WWE Retirement Home

Kale SherarContributor IFebruary 14, 2009

Okay, ever since I started watching TNA, there is one thing that has constantly irritated me aside from Don West's commentary, and that is the fact that TNA is a retirement home for performers who could no longer cut it the WWE.

First we have Kevin Nash.  He had a successful early career as Big Daddy Cool, becoming a triple crown champion.  He then went on to success in WCW, as he ended Goldberg's painfully long winning streak.

He came back to the WWE after WCW was bought out, and couldn't cut it this time around as the NWO was now OLD.  So, Kevin went to TNA where he would have to do little work, but is still stealing the spotlight as a member of the Main Event Mafia.

Second, we have Scott Steiner.  He was back in the WWE during the old WWF days with Rick, but then like so many other big names back then, went to WCW on promises of candy and funny stories.

While there, he garnered quite a reputation as an asshole, even assaulting fellow performers and agents.  He too went to the WWE during the buyout of WCW, couldn't cut it, and is now part of TNA's five main event players in the MEM.

Third we have Booker T.  Booker had great success in WCW as part of Harlem Heat.  He was even present for the Shockmaster incident.  He moved to the WWE in 2002 also, and was one of the more successful WCW rejects, winning the intercontinental, tag team, and world heavyweight championships.

He left WWE in November of 2007, and attempted to make a big splash in TNA, but didn't and is now the holder of a pointless (possibly unsanctioned) title belt.  But he is still in the main even picture though.

Fourth we have Kurt Angle.  He was a terrific success in the WWE, but left in 2006 due to issues with Vince, and the heavy travel schedule.  In TNA, he became a triple crown champ, and now leads the MEM, the only guys who seem to be over in TNA these days.  Don't get me wrong, I like Kurt Angle, but he's finished, too old and broken.

Last, we have Sting.  One of the biggest draws in WCW, and still turns heads in TNA due to his seemingly constant babyface/heel turns in matches.  He will be demise of the MEM, and it's about damn time.

TNA is focusing too much on their old guys who can barely work decent matches anymore due to their long careers taking a hefty toll on them.  Instead, they should be trying to put over their young guys, which was originally the plan for the MEM/Frontline feud.

Including next week's Impact, Petey Williams will have jobbed three straight matches, two of them to Steiner, and now he is out of the job because he is too good of a wrestler and not enough of an entertainer.  But don't worry, they found a great replacement with Dr...erm, Steven Richards coming onto the show.

The point I'm trying to get across is what many insiders hope TNA can do and that is focus on the future, not the past.  If guys like Consequences Creed, Jay Lethal (lose the damn gimmick), Joe, and Styles don't get enough TV time, then TNA will go down just like WCW.  And surprise, surprise, look who is the head writer for the company.
