UCLA Sweeps Pac-10 Honors
After wrapping up their third consecutive Pac-10 title outright, the Bruins continued their dominance by sweeping all individual honors awarded by the conference.
All awards were given based on voting by league coaches.
Kevin Love, UCLA's freshman phenom, was named both PAC-10 Player of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year.
Love merely averaged 17.4 PPG and 10.9 RPG in his first season in Westwood.
Averaging a double-double as a freshman is no easy feat, yet Love showed throughout the year that he was a force to be reckoned with.
Love was also named to the All PAC-10 First Team, as well as the All PAC-10 Freshman Team and Honorable Mention PAC-10 All Defensive Team.
The PAC-10 Defensive Player of the Year (award re-instated for the first time since 1986) was awarded to Russell Westbrook.
As a team, UCLA allowed the opposition only 58.6 PPG and led the league in steals.
However, there was no question that Westbrook led the Bruins' stifling defensive effort.
He recorded 50 steals, and was always guarding the opponent's best offensive player. He more than adequately replaced Arron Afflalo as the defensive leader for the Bruins.
Westbrook also was honored as an All PAC-10 Third Team selection.
In addition to Love and Westbrook's accolades, Darren Collison joined Westbrook on the PAC-10 All Defensive team, and was also named to the All PAC-10 Second Team.
Josh Shipp and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute were named All PAC-10 Honorable Mention. Mbah a Moute was also awarded Honorable Mention PAC-10 All Defensive Team.
