Projecting The 2009 NFL Draft 2.0
Here's my second take on the 2009 NFL Draft, Round One:
1. Detroit Lions: Andre Smith, OT
I look for them to make a strong push for free agent QB Byron Leftwich. If they score him as a free agent before the draft, they'll take care of protecting him. If they can't get a free agent signal caller, they'll take Stafford.

2. St. Louis Rams: Matthew Stafford, QB
This would be ideal for the Rams because Stafford could come in and learn the pro game behind Marc Bulger for a few weeks before Bulger either gets hurt again or stinks enough that he needs to be replaced.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Jason Smith, OT
They have a young quarterback in Tyler Thigpen, a solid running game (when Larry Johnson's healthy and trying), and a nice playmaker outside with Dwayne Bowe. They take an offensive tackle to give Thigpen front-side protection as an eventual replacement for Damion McIntosh at RT.
4. Seattle Seahawks: Eugene Monroe, OT
Crabtree will be tempting, but it doesn't matter who's running the routes if their quarterback can't get to his fifth step on his drop. The Seahawks take advantage of a deep class at offensive tackle.
5. Cleveland Browns: BJ Raji, DT
The Browns have lots of talent on offense that just needs to click like it did in 2007. Raji, the hottest player heading to the combines, next to Shaun Rogers could be a solid middle to a good, young defense.
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Crabtree, WR
Since apparently Drew Rosenhaus is shopping Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmanzadeh could potentially test free agency, if Crabtree falls to the Bengals it's a best case scenario for them. And maybe the worst for Crabtree.
7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin, WR
Two years ago, it was the quarterback. Last year, a running back. Think Al Davis wants talented skill position players?
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Aaron Curry, LB
The perfect replacement for Mike Peterson, who's chances of returning to Jacksonville are slim-to-none.
9. Green Bay Packers: Malcolm Jenkins, CB
Their secondary has a lot of good talent, but lacks depth. Jenkins, next to Charles Woodson, would be a solid coverage secondary. How do you think an old Wolverine would take to teaming with a Buckeye in Wisconsin?
10. San Francisco 49ers: Aaron Maybin, DE
Mike Singletary will have a good defense. Maybin's the best defensive player on the board. If Singletary can build a solid defensive front to keep lineman off stud linebacker Patrick Willis, they'll have something to grow on.
11. Buffalo Bills: Brian Orakpo, DE
They need to stop... something. Orakpo's a physical freak who can play the run and the pass effectively.
12. Denver Broncos: Everette Brown, DE
Denver, like Buffalo, needs talent on defense. Brown would help them get after the quarterback.
13. Washington Redskins: Eben Britton, OT
Chris Samuels isn't a youngster any more, and Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis could use some help up front.
14. New Orleans Saints: Vontae Davis, CB
New Orleans might go with a running back here, but their defense needs help. With Reggie Bush coming back from injury, there are options for the Saints between the secondary and Moreno.
15. Houston Texans: Knowshon Moreno, RB
They just released Ahman Green earlier this week. Andre Johnson's as good as it gets, and Matt Schaub is a solid young quarterback. If they can add the best running back in the draft, they'll be thrilled.
16. San Diego Chargers: Percy Harvin, WR
The future of LT might swing this pick, as might the health of Shawne Merriman and Antonio Gates. Harvin's the best player on the board here for a team that needs to score points.
17. New York Jets: Mark Sanchez, QB
Favre's gone, and they need to add at least depth. Kellen Clemens is a nice player, but either Sanchez of Freeman could be the future of the Jets.
18. Chicago Bears: Hakeem Nicks, WR
The Bears need a receiver, badly. If they do not make a move in the trade or free agent markets, Nicks is a nice, big receiver with good hands and solid wheels.
19. Tampa Bay Buccanneers: Josh Freeman, QB
John Gruden bringing in a quarterback? Seriously?
20. Detroit Lions: Brandon Pettitgrew, TE
I know Matt Millen's gone... but they could use another body to catch passes since they dealt away Roy Williams last year.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: William Moore, S
Brian Dawkins isn't going to be around forever. Moore might be available later, but he's the best safety in the draft and the Eagles are in a position that they can draft to fill specific needs, especially with a second first round pick later.
22. Minnesota Vikings: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR
Another weapon for... whomever is playing quarterback.
23. New England Patriots: Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB
Lawrence Maroney's had problems staying healthy, and they need a running game to take pressure off Tom Brady and/or Matt Cassell.
24. Atlanta Falcons: Michael Johnson, DE
Johnson might be the best speed-rushing end in the draft. Putting him opposite John Abraham could be scary for opposing quarterbacks.
25. Miami Dolphins: Rey Maualuga, LB
They need a leader on defense. Bill Parcells has always valued talent at linebacker, and Maualuga could fill a big need in Miami.
26. Baltimore Ravens: Brian Cushing, LB
Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs are potential free agents. Cushing could be a nice fit in the 3-4 in Baltimore.
27. Indianapolis: DJ Moore, CB
The Colts will likely franchise CB Calvin Heyden, but adding Moore to a suspect secondary with health issues is big. The future of Marvin Harrison might impact this selection as well.
28. Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Oher, OT
Someone to protect Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook.
29. New York Giants: James Laurinaitis, LB
Depth on a defense that suffered from a number of injuries last year.
30. Tennessee Titans: Tyson Jackson, DE
A big body talent to play on a great defensive line.
31. Arizona Cardinals: LeSean McCoy, RB
A replacement candidate for Edgerrrin James. If Anquan Boldin leaves, a receiver might happen here.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Juaquin Iglesias, WR
Maybe a stretch, but Iglesias is a talented player and Hines Ward isn't getting any younger.
