With the 11th pick in the 2009 B/R NFL Mock Draft, the Buffalo Bills have selected...Aaron Maybin; Defensive End, Penn State. The Denver Broncos are now on the clock.
With the selection of Maybin, the Bills have added an undersized pass rush specialist, who may be best fit for a 3-4 scheme. However, he will definitely upgrade the pass rush and give the team a legitimate option outside of Aaron Schobel.
Now it's time to head to the Mile High City, where the Denver Broncos had another late season collapse. With only three games to play, the Broncos watched a three game lead discintigrate right before their very eyes. That three game losing streak was capped off by a 52-21 blowout loss to the hated rival, San Diego Chargers.
Longtime head coach and Denver legend Mike Shanahan was fired as a result of this debacle, and the Broncos replaced him with 32-year old Josh McDaniels, formerly of the New England Patriots.
McDaniels inherits a team that has one of the league's best offensive units, but also one of the very worst defenses. Here are the Broncos' top needs heading into draft day.
1. Nose Tackle
2. Safety
3. Linebacker
4. Running Back
5. Defensive Line
6. Developmental slot receiver
You make the call Broncos fans! Vote in the poll for the player you feel is worthy of the 12th overall selection in this year's draft!
1. Everette Brown; Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Florida State
Brown is one of the top hybrid defensive ends in the entire draft. He was very productive in his time at FSU, and has a lot of real potential for the next level. However, the Broncos are making a slow transition to the 3-4 defense, and may not want to risk such a high pick on a player who is going to have to learn a new position.
2. Brian Cushing; Outside Linebacker, USC
Cushing is a very rare athlete. He is gifted with incredible speed to go along with his ideal linebacker size. He is an absolute maniac on the field, and while he may have been overshadowed by former USC teammates Rey Maualuga and Keith Rivers, he is just as good of a professional prospect.
3. Alphonso Smith; Cornerback, Wake Forest
Go ahead and tell me it's too early for Smith, but please don't do so until you watch the tape. Smith is the most gifted cornerback in the draft in terms of pass coverage, and would be the best corner overall if not for his short stature. Dre Bly is not the player he once was, and Champ Bailey is not getting any younger.
4. Knowshon Moreno; Running Back, Georgia
Broncos fans would snarl and shout at this pick in a negative fashion on draft day, but when they saw the results come game day they would all be singing a different tune. If the situation plays out like it has, where Denver is unable to get a top NT or MLB, it's not out of the question that they would take a flyer on the best athlete in the draft. Not to mention one of the top playmakers. Moreno would be the lightning to Peyton Hillis' thunder.
5. Vontae Davis; Cornerback, Illinois
Davis is a very raw, but very talented prospect. The brother of current 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is one of the more gifted players in the draft. He has a great combination of size and speed, but his overall coverage skills have yet to develop. The Broncos need an immediate impact, and I'm not certain Davis can bring that.
6. Chris Wells; Running Back, Ohio State
Wells is a bit overrated in my opinion, but he has the ideal size you look for in an NFL running back. He has good speed, and great agility. His injury problems in college may steer teams this high in the draft away from him, but when healthy he could project as the best player in the draft overall.
There you have it Broncos fans, now vote in the poll for the player you think should be selected 12th overall this April!
