Saul Alvarez: Why the Canelo Curse Won't Work Against Cornelius Bundrage
Ryan Burton of Boxing Scene reports that Saul "Canelo' Alvarez is heavily favored to pick Cornelius "K-9" Bundrage as his next opponent.
The fight will be a unification of two junior middleweight titles, Canelo's WBC belt and K-9's IBF companion.
K-9's appeal comes from not only his belt, but his aggressive boxing skills that provide both challenge and fan-friendly fights, often with a knockout ending.
But after Canelo's three previous opponents all met one disaster or another, including a motorcycle accident, injured shoulder and broken jaw, is Bundrage immune to the Canelo curse?
For just being mentioned as a strong possibility of being Canelo's next opponent, will Bundrage suddenly succumb to some horrific event?
Probably not. Here are five reasons why.
5. Cory Spinks Doesn't Knock out Opponents
1 of 5Cory Spinks (39-6, 11 KO) hasn't scored a knockout in over 10 years, and he's never scored a knockout at junior middleweight.
Cornelius Bundrage has a chin that won't be dented easily, and Spinks is not the man to do it.
4. K-9 Will Run Through Spinks' Jab
2 of 5Spinks' career best came in a unanimous decision victory over Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO) at welterweight.
Judah never turned up the action, and Spinks continually out-jabbed him.
Bundrage will run through Spinks like Judah learned to do when he rematched Spinks and achieved his temporarily redemptive knockout in Round 9.
3. K-9's Too Old for Motorcycles and the Buffoonery of Youth
3 of 528-year-old James Kirkland complained about the deal offered.
30-year-old Paul Williams was paralyzed from the waist down in a motorcycle accident.
25-year-old Victor Ortiz got too cocky against Josesito Lopez and got a broken jaw in return.
K-9 is 39 years old and has no time to turn down deals of a lifetime, get in wild accidents or underestimate opponents.
2. He Beat Spinks Badly Once Before
4 of 5K-9 has already bum-rushed through the Spinks jab once to win his IBF world title in the first place. Spinks won't win again.
He doesn't have the power to get Bundrage's respect, and he doesn't have the tools to keep K-9 from chewing him into kibbles and bits again.
1. Cornelius "K-9" Bundrage vs. Canelo Is Destined for CBS
5 of 5Golden Boy Promotions has scheduled three failed attempts to make a Showtime pay-per-view for Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 15.
Could it be that destiny wants them to return boxing to network television?
Golden Boy has mentioned the possibility of airing Canelo's fight on CBS, Showtime's parent company.
Cornelius "K-9" Bundrage has had 15 minutes of fame before in the reality series known as The Contender. That means K-9 is made of reality TV already.
K-9, who's very vocal about his Christian faith, will appeal to millions of viewers with his mixture of humbleness and hunger.
Canelo will appeal to millions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans looking to see one of their own rise to the occasion in front of the biggest audience possible.
It just doesn't get any better than this. Maybe everything happens for a reason, and maybe Canelo vs. K-9 on CBS is just the beginning of very beautifully bright future.
