Lolo Jones: Hurdler Will Become America's Darling with Shawn Johnson Gone

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

Those of you who are distraught about gymnast Shawn Johnson's retirement need not fret. There's a new sheriff in town.

Her name is Lolo Jones, and she will endear herself in your hearts by the time the 2012 Olympics has run its course. She's not just easy on the eyes, she brings a compelling story to the table.

Jones was favored to win the 100-meter hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but tripped on the ninth hurdle, effectively ending her chances at the gold medal. That was her story of heartbreak, but the London Olympics will serve as her redemption song.

Her failure in Beijing is occasionally attributed to her extremely serious spinal cord injury. She has since recovered and is looking to make waves this summer. Jones said this, according to Examiner.com:

"

Man, I was so close to that gold, I tasted it. Everywhere I've gone the last four years, people say, 'Oh, you're that girl who messed up.' I no longer want that reputation.

"

Sometimes we need these kind of people in the Olympics. The public is usually unfamiliar with the majority of the participants, so it is good for the sport to have a focal point.

Jones already has the inside track to international popularity. She most recently caught the public eye when she was lumped into the same conversation as New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow.

The best part about her inclusion in the Olympic team is that she didn't even think she was going to make it, but did so by finishing in third place in qualifying.

There aren't many Olympians who will have to deal with the same type of coverage that Jones will in London, other than swimmer Michael Phelps and possibly sprinter Tyson Gay.

Her situation is a bit different from Johnson's, mostly because of the age difference. Johnson was just 16 years old in 2008, so the American public believed that she would be back multiple times for more. In Jones' case, she's on the cusp of 30 years old and may be looking at her last chance for glory.

It takes more than just talent to become a fan favorite in Olympic competition. It takes charisma and personality, maybe even more so than ability. Luckily for Jones, she has all the tools necessary to become a worldwide star.

Make sure you tune in later this summer to watch Jones' captivating story unfold.
