WWE: Could Sheamus and CM Punk Eventually Unify the Championships?

Nick HouserJun 6, 2018

There's an amazing angle waiting to be plucked from the heap of ideas yet to be voiced by members of the WWE creative team—the unification of the company's two major titles.

It's there for the taking, and now—or in the very near future—is a prime time for pursuing the storyline.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if no one else sees it.

WWE champion CM Punk and World Heavyweight champion Sheamus, battling to become the ultimate victor and ruler of the WWE.

One belt. One champion.

But how would or could it work, you ask? Simple. One of them turns heel.

Here's the angle:

Currently, Sheamus and CM Punk are buddy-buddy with each other. Both are hotheads, however, and one or both can spark the argument of which is superior.

After all, if Punk is the best in the world, why is Sheamus the Heavyweight Champion of the world? This argument inevitably leads to a showdown where one will walk away with two titles.

I doubt the storyline could work if both remain faces, because the fans would be forced to choose sides.

Okay, so that's how it would work, but why do it?

It's a Huge Summer Angle

The creative team has been tasked with implementing a captivating angle that will shock and awe enough to peak interest through the summer months.

This could work.

Outside of having a legend return to ring action full-time, there's nothing bigger of a story than to have the two men at the top feud. It's even bigger if both of their titles are on the line.

At this point, no feud will be new.

Fans have seen The Undertaker battle Brock Lesnar. They've seen Lesnar tackle John Cena and Cena take on Punk. Daniel Bryan's taken a shot at both champions. Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show won't blow anyone's mind.

Not only would unifying the championships be huge, turning either Punk or Sheamus heel would be equally monumental.

It Would Freshen Up the Roster and a Character

Many in the Internet Wrestling Community are bored of Punk and beg for him to return to being a heel, where they feel his persona was much better utilized.

Unfortunately for the IWC, Punk is huge when it comes to the WWE Universe.

Punk turning heel would shock many, but I'm not sure it's the right move just yet.

Sheamus, on the other hand, seems to be hated on more by the IWC while receiving less pop from the WWE Universe. He is the more likely to turn heel.

The move would freshen up his character.

Sheamus is a brawler who loves to fight. It's a quality persona, but it needs to be fully fulfilled. Sheamus shouldn't pick and choose when and who. Instead, he needs to be a beast who will brawl with anyone at any time.

Less talking and smiling, more fighting.

The simple shift lends more power to Sheamus as a performer. He could even get away with adopting more of a fisticuffs style, which in turn would justify a lack of moves (not to say he doesn't have enough).

I've written before that with Lesnar's lack of television time, Mark Henry's injury and The Big Show's woe-is-me attitude, there is a lack of dominant, monster heels.

Sheamus as a heel fills this role.

Unification—It's What Fans Have Been Asking For

The current setup of separate rosters and branding is confusing even to frequent viewers.

The Big Show announced on SmackDown he will participate in Raw's Money in the Bank competition. Daniel Bryan has battled for both shows' titles in the last few months.

Yet, Brodus Clay isn't allowed on Raw. There's no room on Raw for The Miz, but they won't move him to SmackDown. They've even pushed the draft back.

The WWE should get rid of the two brands.

The announcement would also serve as a huge summer story. On the other hand, the company could subtly commit to erasing the separation without even making a formal announcement and few would notice.

Of course, a unification of rosters begins with the unification of titles.

Such an act ends another of WWE's most confusing debates—which title holds more value?

Sheamus and CM Punk are the perfect men to solve that question.

The winner can then unveil that new championship belt fans keep hearing about.
