Broughton's Fav 5: The Top 5 WWE Superstars of June
Welcome back to another edition of Broughton's Fav Five!
After a very eventful, action-packed month, I have mapped out the top five superstars thus far in June. Impact, wins/losses and importance of matches all came to mind when deciding who would be at the top of my list.
No Way Out has come and gone and with Money in the Bank on the horizon, big things will be coming. However, let's take a look at who is on top right now. Let's begin!!!
No. 5: Dolph Ziggler
1 of 5This one was a toss-up between Ziggler and Kane, but I decided to go with The Showoff for a few reasons. For one, he was able to break away from Swagger and go back into singles competition. Also, he took a major leap into the World title picture after Del Rio got hurt.
Dolph's Ziggler's career continues to be a wild, yet somewhat entertaining one. In just about a year, Ziggler has gone from the World title picture, to jobbing, to the WWE title picture, to midcard, right back to the World title picture. Yet through it all, he continues to impress every time he steps in the ring. Even after being stuck with the gimmicks of a male cheerleader and a caddy, he has found a way to get noticed (despite being given such an awful name).
At the beginning of the month, Ziggler wouldn't have even been in the top 10 on this list. He was once again back to jobbing for bigger superstars and running in circles with his tag team partner, Jack Swagger. However, what seemed like disaster for the WWE turned to a huge break for Ziggler.
With Orton and Jericho on the shelf with suspensions, Del Rio's injury left a huge gap for No Way Out's title match. With nowhere else to turn, WWE gave Ziggler the opportunity of a lifetime. While he didn't walk out victorious, he once again proved himself on a big stage.
With WWE in need of some new main eventer, Ziggler could very well be at the top of the list. Look for Dolph's stock to eventually rise as the summer heats up.
No. 4: John Cena
2 of 5Coming off a loss to Big Johnny, Cena ran straight into grasp of the Big Show. Under a revamped monster heel persona, the Big Show looked nearly unstoppable. The key word? Nearly. John Cena once again went all Super Cena on Show and got Big Johnny fired.
While all was good for Cena and his prepubescent fans, he couldn't have done it without a little help from his friends (Beatle reference). After Big Show sent away Zack Ryder and Santino Marella, Kofi Kingston took charge and finally sent to giant down. Cena took advantage with an AA and was able to climb out of the cage as Brodus Clay held Johnny down.
To my calculations, Clay, Kingston, Ryder, Marella and even McMahon attempted to help Cena, while Johnny was the lone man on Big Show's side.
The following night on Raw, Cena once again was victorious, but it wasn't much as Otunga and Big Show left Johnny out to dry. After a trio of AA's, Johnny tapped out and Cena won yet another main event.
John won he main event of No Way Out, which would usually sky rocket him to the top of these rankings. However, the match was weak in comparison to the two world title matches. Not to mention, he needed all the help he could get to walk out victorious.
No. 3: Daniel Bryan
3 of 5My choice to put Bryan here could easily be protested, as he lost yet another WWE Championship match. However, let's take a look at both losses.
At Over the Limit, Bryan made Punk tap out just seconds after being pinned. In his triple threat match at No Way Out, he lost the match, but wasn't even involved in the outcome. Instead Kane was the man being pinned.
Bryan's rise to the top has been a special one, as he quickly became a favorite among the IWC. While he hasn't won the WWE title in his two opportunities, he continues to impress nearly everyone, including myself. Look for Bryan to continue his chase for the title, but with a probable matchup between Punk and Cena at SummerSlam, he may not walk out victorious for a third straight pay-per-view.
I'm a huge fan of Bryan and it looks like there will be nothing but good things for him in the near future.
No. 2: Sheamus
4 of 5Sheamus has continued to dominate as the No. 1 face right now on SmackDown! (With Orton at out of action.) With another win over Ziggler at No Way Out, Sheamus looks untouchable as the World champ.
However, I have grown to get bored by Sheamus as he is turning into the next rendition of Super Cena. The most fearful part of this idea is Triple H loves The Great White, as they are good friends outside of the ring.
I actually like what Sheamus brings to table, but I don't think he should be dominating the way he has. Both Ziggler and D-Bry were made to look weak, as Bryan even lost in an 18-second matchup. I'm big on both Ziggler and Daniel, so seeing them both get manhandled wasn't fun to watch.
Sheamus is a solid performer and deserves to be a future stud. I don't think it is his job to be a dominating face. Look for Sheamus' run to end sooner than later as the fans may grow tired of the same old thing for The Celtic Warrior.
No. 1: CM Punk
5 of 5What Punk has done over the past year cannot be overstated. He has risen to the top and earned every bit of it. Over the past month, he hasn't lost a step as he retained the WWE Championship yet again, this time in a triple threat match against Kane and Daniel Bryan.
While Punk's reign has been dominant just like Sheamus', I feel differently about Punk. During his matches, CM Punk has managed to win in controversial fashion at times and even lost a few weeks back to Bryan in a non-title match. I expect him to continue his reign into SummerSlam, when he is apparently prime and ready to face John Cena.
Punk has the No. 1 spot over Sheamus for one real reason. While Sheamus is running through SmackDown dominantly, Punk is holding his title for what is supposed to be WWE's No. 1 show. Not to mention, while Sheamus faced a substitute challenger, Punk had to defeat two men to hold onto his championship.
Look for Punk to keep winning as he prepares for his big summer up against John Cena.
