2009 NFL Mock Draft Through Round Five: A Major Shake-Up in the Top 10

Tanner ThomsFeb 12, 2009

It's February and time for my monthly mock draft.

I have added a fifth round to my newest mock draft.

Let's get it poppin'!

Round One

1. Detroit Lions—Andre Smith, Offensive Tackle, Alabama

Before you dedicated Lions fans have a stroke, let me tell you something: Matt Cassel is within inches of being your future quarterback. Detroit has two first round picks. I think that the Lions will pull a deal to trade a first rounder for Cassel. If they do so, Andre Smith needs to be the pick.

2. St. Louis Rams—Michael Crabtree, Wide Receiver, Texas Tech

Michael Crabtree has received hype similar to that which Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson received. Torry Holt's career with the Rams might be over. So, how can you rely on Donnie Avery? You can't. Crabtree will be the premiere player for St. Louis.

3. Kansas City Chiefs—Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, Georgia

I hate this pick more than I hate the Chiefs. Tyler Thigpen was a good starter and deserves to start next year, but he won't. Stafford appears to be the pick. The Chiefs are in re-building mode once again. There is no better way to start than with a quarterback.

4. Seattle Seahawks—Eugene Monroe, Offensive Tackle, Virginia

Walter Jones is 35 years old and he is probably leaning towards hanging up the cleats for good. With Crabtree off the board, the Seahawks go for the next biggest need. Eugene Monroe will be a stud and will create holes for Julius Jones.

5. Cleveland Browns—Aaron Curry, Linebacker, Wake Forest

Best player available here for the Cleveland Browns. Willie McGinest, at most, has one year left in the tank. Aaron Curry will be the turnaround for one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

6. Cincinnati Bengals—B.J. Raji, Nose Tackle, Boston College

The Bengals missed out on both Sedrick Ellis and Glenn Dorsey in last year's draft. This year, they get the player they need. B.J. Raji is flying up the charts, and with an impressive combine he might even go top five.

7. Oakland Raiders—Brian Orakpo, Defensive End, Texas

Oakland will be the dumbest team in America if they don't get one of these receivers: T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Anquan Boldin, or Terrell Owens. It looks as though both Boldin and Owens are done with their respective teams. Brian Orakpo will be the missing link on the defensive line.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars- Jason Smith, Offensive Tackle, Baylor

The Jaguars had offensive line injuries all season long. They need some serious depth at offensive tackle. David Garrard was knocked down more than any quarterback in the whole league. What does that tell you?

9. Green Bay Packers—Everette Brown, Defensive End, Florida State

All of Green Bay's main first round targets are gone. Therefore, they go for the next best thing. The Packers were one of the worst at stopping the run. Everette Brown will fill a need that K.G.B. left behind.

10. San Francisco 49ers—Mark Sanchez, Quarterback, USC

No surprise here. The 49'ers have no starting caliber quarterback on the roster. Alex Smith is the second biggest bust of all time, behind Ryan Leaf. Mark Sanchez will turnaround this franchise from day one.

11. Buffalo Bills—Aaron Maybin, Defensive End, Penn State

The Bills finished with only 24 sacks forced on the year. That's 1.5 per game! Aaron Schobel has clearly lost a step in his game. Aaron Maybin should be the pick here. Buffalo needs to focus on re-vamping the D-line.

12. Denver Broncos—Rey Maualuga, Linebacker, USC

Now that Mike Nolan is the defensive coordinator, Denver has switched to the 3-4 scheme. Rey Maualuga's stock has slipped a bit, which is perfect for the Broncos. The focus for Denver is fixing the defense. It's a great way to start here.

13. Washington Redskins—Michael Oher, Offensive Tackle, Ole Miss

The Redskins have big needs at offensive tackle. The main reason for this is the age of their two starters. Michael Oher would be the perfect fit for the Redskins. Don't count out his teammate, Peria Jerry, at this pick though.

14. New Orleans Saints—Malcolm Jenkins, Cornerback, Ohio State

Enough! Enough of having second rate rejects as your starting cornerbacks. Start over from scratch. Terry Porter should start next year and so would Malcolm Jenkins. Nobody else deserves to start.

15. Houston Texans—Vontae Davis, Cornerback, Illinois

Houston should try to trade down with this pick. Vontae Davis normally wouldn't be the guy you would think the Texans take. Dunta Robinson is a free-agent and he may be let go due to his injury-prone seasons.

16. San Diego Chargers—Chris Wells, Running Back, Ohio State

LaDainian Tomlinson is not the running back that he once was. Darren Sproles is headed for free agency and I don't think he will resign. Chris Wells is a big and physical running back, which San Diego needs.

17. New York Jets—Jeremy Maclin, Wide Receiver, Missouri

Laveranues Coles will be a free agent after this coming season. Jerricho Cotchery had a good year, but he isn't quite ready to take over that No. 1. Jeremy Maclin is a steal here and the Jets need to take him.

18. Chicago Bears—Larry English, Defensive End, Northern Illinois

Truth be told, the Bears desperately need a wide receiver, but with Percy Harvin being very similar to Devin Hester, I don't see it happening. Chicago needs to focus on what they used to dominate at...defense.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Knowshon Moreno, Running Back, Georgia

I had Josh Freeman going here for a while and then I heard the rumors that Luke McCown is expected to be the No. 1 quarterback next year. With that said, Tampa Bay should focus on fixing the running game.

20. Detroit Lions from: Dallas—Tyson Jackson, Defensive End, LSU

Detroit's defense was awful last season. The Lions must fix the defensive line immediately. Tyson Jackson's stock is rising quickly up the charts. I expect the Lions to draft at least one defensive player with their first two rounders...if they don't trade them.

21. Philadelphia Eagles—William Beatty, Offensive Tackle, Connecticut

Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan are both headed toward free agency. It's unlikely that the Eagles will keep both players. Philadelphia must focus on finding a replacement with one of their two first-rounders.

22. Minnesota Vikings—Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver, Florida

I wrote an article about letting the fans decide who the Vikings should take with their first round pick. Percy Harvin won in a landslide. Minnesota needs at least one more play-maker on offense. I strongly believe Jeff Garcia will be our starting quarterback next year.

23. New England Patriots—James Laurinaitis, Inside Linebacker, Ohio State

Before you chew my head off with this pick, hear me out. Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi, and Junior Seau, aren't exactly in their prime. At least one will likely retire within the next two years. New England needs to get younger in their front seven.

24. Atlanta Falcons—Brandon Pettigrew, Tight End, Oklahoma State

Atlanta had a great year, there is no denying it. In order for Matt Ryan to truly succeed, the Falcons must get one more explosive player on offense. Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Brandon Pettigrew, and Michael Turner sounds like a great offense to me.

25. Miami Dolphins—Duke Robinson, Guard, Oklahoma

The Dolphins can fill a huge need at guard with the selection of Duke Robinson. With the success of Jake Long last year, Miami will have one of the better offensive lines that there is.

26. Baltimore Ravens—Hakeem Nicks, Wide Receiver, North Carolina

Derrick Mason just recently turned 35 years old. Mark Clayton seems to be improving, but he isn't worthy of being the No. 1 receiver. Hakeem Nicks would be the perfect fit for the Ravens.

27. Indianapolis Colts—Peria Jerry, Defensive Tackle, Ole Miss

Indianapolis has been looking for a solid defensive tackle for years now. Anthony McFarland was an absolute dud and with Ed Johnson getting charged with possession of marijuana, that sends out a sign of trouble.

28. Philadelphia Eagles from: Carolina—Louis Delmas, Safety, Western Michigan

Brian Dawkins will be 36 in October. He is a free agent this offseason and with his age being a concern, he may not be re-signed. The Eagles will need to find the future replacement.

29. New York Giants—Brian Cushing, Outside Linebacker, USC

With Osi Umenyiora coming back next year, the Giants' D-line is set. Linebacker is something that could be improved though. Antonio Pierce, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Brian Cushing make for a frightening line-backing group.

30. Tennessee Titans—D.J. Moore, Cornerback, Vanderbilt

The Titans also don't have many needs to fill. With that said, Nick Harper will be 35 years old within the first week of the 2009 regular season. D.J. Moore will provide great depth.

31. Arizona Cardinals—LeSean McCoy, Running Back, Pittsburgh

For some reason, the Arizona Cardinals were able to run the ball throughout their playoff surge. Edgerrin James has still stated that he wants to be released. Tim Hightower is not the future running back for this team.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers—Paul Kruger, Defensive End, Utah

Aaron Smith turns 33 years old in April. With most of the top offensive linemen off the board, Pittsburgh goes with fixing the defensive line. Paul Kruger is climbing up the charts as of late.

Round Two

33. Detroit Lions—Darius Butler, Cornerback, Connecticut

Leigh Bodden was cut recently. Yeah, the guy they traded to get for Shaun Rogers.

34. Kansas City Chiefs—Michael Johnson, Defensive End/Linebacker, Georgia Tech

Kansas City's front seven is horrid.

35. St. Louis Rams—Eben Britton, Offensive Tackle, Arizona

A steal this late. The replacement for Orlando Pace.

36. Cleveland Browns—Shonn Greene, Running Back, Iowa

Although his style of play is similar to Jamal Lewis', the Browns need another running back.

37. Seattle Seahawks—Sean Smith, Cornerback/Safety, Utah

Could go much earlier, but will be selected here if available.

38. Cincinnati Bengals—Clint Sintim, Defensive End/Linebacker, Virginia

Cincinnati's defensive line sucked last year.

39. Jacksonville Jaguars—Victor "Macho" Harris, Cornerback, Virginia Tech

Drayton Florence was recently cut.

40. Oakland Raiders—Darrius Heyward-Bey, Wide Receiver, Maryland

Javon Walker should be cut within the next couple of days or weeks.

41. Green Bay Packers—Troy Kropog, Offensive Tackle, Tulane

Mark Tauscher is a free agent to be.

42. Buffalo Bills—Alex Mack, Center, California

Quite the steal here. A great second round selection.

43. San Francisco 49ers—Rashad Johnson, Safety, Alabama

Mark Roman's contract expires after the 2009 season.

44. Miami Dolphins from: Washington—William Moore, Safety, Missouri

Yeremiah Bell might be gone due to free-agency.

45. New York Giants from: New Orleans—Kenny Britt, Wide Receiver, Rutgers

If Plaxico Burress can't come back, the Giants need depth.

46. Houston Texans—Clay Matthews, Outside Linebacker, USC

Houston got so desperate for linebackers that they signed Roosevelt Colvin.

47. New England Patriots from: San Diego—Alphonso Smith, Cornerback, Wake Forest

The Patriots' cornerback squad is average at best.

48. Denver Broncos—Ron Brace, Nose Tackle, Boston College

The Broncos need a solid nose tackle for the new 3-4.

49. Chicago Bears—Fenuki Tupou, Offensive Tackle, Oregon

John Tait turns 34 years old very soon. Chicago needs young blood.

50. Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Derrick Williams, Wide Receiver, Penn State

Joey Galloway is near retirement.

51. Dallas Cowboys—Patrick Chung, Safety, Oregon

Roy Williams will be trade bait all offseason long.

52. Philadelphia Eagles—Herman Johnson, Guard, LSU

Andy Reid loves offensive linemen. This selection will allow Todd Herremans to move to left tackle.

53. New York Jets—Mike Mickens, Cornerback, Cincinnati

Ty Law was brought in to start mid-way through the season. What does that tell you?

54. Minnesota Vikings—Phil Loadholt, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma

The Vikings need a dominant right tackle.

55. Atlanta Falcons—Tyrone McKenzie, Outside Linebacker, South Florida

Atlanta will need a talented strongside linebacker next season.

56. Miami Dolphins—Brian Robiskie, Wide Receiver, Ohio State

At 6'3", 207 pounds, Miami can't pass his size up.

57. Baltimore Ravens—Domonique Johnson, Cornerback, Jackson State

Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle are both near the end of their careers.

58. New England Patriots—Michael Hamlin, Safety, Clemson

Three picks...three defensive players drafted.

59. Carolina Panthers—Josh Freeman, Quarterback, Kansas State

WOW. Josh Freeman this late? You've seen right.

60. New York Giants—Devin Moore, Running Back, Wyoming

They will need a replacement for either Brandon Jacobs or Derrick Ward.

61. Indianapolis Colts—Juaquin Iglesias, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma

Marvin Harrison might be on his way out of Indianapolis.

62. Tennessee Titans—Scott McKillop, Inside Linebacker, Pittsburgh

The Titans need depth at linebacker.

63. Arizona Cardinals—Max Unger, Center, Oregon

Arizona needs solid interior blocking.

64. Pittsburgh Steelers—Andy Levitre, Guard, Oregon State

The Steelers desperately need offensive line help.

Round Three

65. Detroit Lions—Kraig Urbik, Guard, Wisconsin

66. St. Louis Rams—Jairus Byrd, Safety/Cornerback, Oregon

67. Kansas City Chiefs—Jonathan Luigs, Center, Arkansas

68. Seattle Seahawks—Brandon LaFell, Wide Receiver, LSU

69. Dallas Cowboys from: Cleveland—Louis Murphy, Wide Receiver, Florida

70. Cincinnati Bengals—Donald Brown, Running Back, Connecticut

71. Oakland Raiders—Mark Parson, Cornerback, Ohio

72. Jacksonville Jaguars—Brandon Gibson, Wide Receiver, Washington State

73. Green Bay Packers—Fili Moala, Defensive Tackle/Defensive End, USC

74. San Francisco 49'ers—Pat White, Quarterback/Wide Receiver, West Virginia

75. Buffalo Bills—Chase Coffman, Tight End, Missouri

76. New York Jets—Nate Davis, Quarterback, Ball State

77. Houston Texans—Trevor Canfield, Guard, Cincinnati

78. San Diego Chargers—Anthony Parker, Guard, Tennessee

79. Denver Broncos—Derek Pegues, Safety, Mississippi State
