Brett Favre Says Goodbye: The Jet Has Finally Taken Off

Mj OctiganFeb 11, 2009

The day has come yet again. Brett Favre has announced his retirement from the New York Jets.

It was a little more casual than the emotional goodbye less than a year ago in Green Bay.

It was reported that Favre's agent, James Cook, was informed by Brett to contact the Jets and tell them that he would be retiring.

The news was confirmed Wednesday afternoon by the Jets' new head coach, Rex Ryan.

Favre could be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time.

He leads in several categories in the record books, including most wins, starts, passing yards, passing TDs, completions, and also the most interceptions.

Favre has not said why he is retiring yet, but we can speculate.

His league-high 22 interceptions in 2008 were probably a big factor. It was obvious that Brett was on the decline, and I think he was aware of it too.

His two touchdowns and nine interceptions in the last five games were proof of this. That, and the Jets failing to make the playoffs at 9-7, thanks to a second-half collapse.

The start of the season looked good, but then Favre's age kicked in and only losing was left for him and his Jets.

Controversies with players and a not-so-great passer rating probably led Brett to believe perhaps he should be done after this season. Let's not forget that he is 39-years-old, and would turn 40 early in the 2009 season.

I have reason to believe that this will be it for Favre, and that he won't do what he did last year and come out of retirement near the beginning of the season. His games and records will never be forgotten.

However, one must wonder how the one-year trade for Favre will impact the Jets this season.
