US Open Golf 2012 Leaderboard: Final Standings from Olympic Club
The 2012 US Open crowned an unlikely champion while better-known players fell by the wayside.
Webb Simpson claimed major glory in just his fourth professional season. The Wake Forest graduate shot a masterful 68 in Round 4 and chased down former US Open champion Jim Furyk in the tournament's waning moments.
Let's take a look at the final leaderboard.
| 1 | W. Simpson | +1 |
| T2 | G. McDowell | +2 |
| T2 | M. Thompson | +2 |
| T5 | J. Furyk | +3 |
| T5 | J. Dufner | +3 |
| T5 | P. Harrington | +3 |
| T5 | D. Toms | +3 |
| T5 | J. Peterson | +3 |
| 9 | E. Els | +4 |
A solid blend of unknowns, up-and-comers and household names round out the top 10 at the Olympic Club this year. Others, like Lee Westwood (+6) and Tiger Woods (+7), did not put their best feet forward.
The tournament had its share of twists and turns.
Furyk seemed to have control on the front nine of Sunday's Round 4, but viewers could almost see his grip loosening with every stroke.
He seemed nervous, fidgety and altogether uncomfortable.
Simpson, on the other hand, did not. With icy coolness, he stayed the course. He didn't shoot over par on any hole past the fifth stop in Round 4.
He slowly and systematically ran Furyk down in the tournament's most meaningful moments.
But even that drama was nearly trumped down the stretch.
Second-place finisher Graeme McDowell was one missed put away from extending US Open play into Monday. If he had birdied the 18th hole, he would have tied Simpson, and we would be faced with playoff golf.
While this tournament was exciting for players like Simpson and McDowell, it was equally disappointing for others.
Woods fell flat on his face at the start of Round 4 and never recovered from multiple bogeys. Westwood was inconsistent throughout the entire fourth round, and Furyk is probably more disappointed than the two players combined.
All in all, though, the tournament didn't disappoint.
High-caliber play was showcased on one of golf's grandest stages, and a relatively new face was handed the trophy Sunday evening.
