Rory McIlroy: Why His Promising Career Is Rapidly Fading
The 2012 US Open was not friendly to PGA Tour stars such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy was a non-factor from day one, while Tiger collapsed during the weekend.
While Woods has showed some signs of promise in recent tournaments, Rory McIlroy has simply seemed to regress.
He failed to make the cut in three of four events leading up to this year’s US Open.
At the 2011 US Open, he set a record for the lowest four-round score in the 111-year history of the event. The 22-year-old’s 16-under par performance was one of the best displays of golf the world has ever seen.
Since then, McIlroy has been lingering amongst the top of the World Golf Rankings. He’s been in a constant battle for the No. 1 spot with the likes of fellow Europeans Lee Westwood and Luke Donald.
After coming off a win at the Honda Classic and a third-place finish at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March, Rory seemed ready to make a run for the green jacket. He ultimately finished a disappointing 40th at The Masters.
He bounced back with a second-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship, before missing the next three cuts at The Players Championship, PGA Championship, and the Memorial Tournament.
He finished up his most recent outing at the US Open with a 10-over par after two days, failing to defend his crown and missing the cut for the fourth time in his last five events.
His recent struggles are the result of only one thing.
A lack of focus.
There’s no doubt Rory McIlroy has all of the talent to become one of the greatest golfers of our time.
In order for him to ever reach that potential, he’s going to need to get his priorities straight and start polishing his golf game.
All signs from his sudden slump point toward off-the-course distractions and a lack of dedication to his beloved sport.
The great Jack Nicklaus recently criticized some of McIlroy’s poor youthful decisions as attributing to his exceptionally awful play.
It's a known fact that he's spent significantly less time practicing this year, and it has certainly shown as of late.
But perhaps the greatest factor contributing to this slump is the beautiful young lady he's been seeing, international tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
These two young phenoms seem to thoroughly enjoy each other’s company. Unfortunately for them, it seems that both parties are suffering professionally because of it.
After spending the past year at No. 1 on the WTA Singles Rankings, Wozniacki has now dropped to No. 9 overall, joining her boyfriend in his fall from the top.
McIlroy has addressed his poor play and recognizes that he needs to spend more time practicing if he ever hopes to get things back together. Golf fans everywhere are hoping that he does just that.
Ever since Tiger’s fall from grace, the golf world has been waiting for another clear-cut No. 1 player to emerge. With Webb Simpson's recent win at the 2012 US Open, that means we've now seen a different winner at 16 straight major events.
Perhaps Woods will regain his form and enjoy a few more years of dominance before his time is through.
Or maybe McIlroy will rededicate himself to the game and show the passion and drive that is needed to become a perennial champion.
Let's just hope that Rory doesn't let the public pressure or his love life get in the way of his golf game for long.
It would be a shame to watch this 23-year-old fall off the beaten path and ruin a promising future.
