Morgan Rielly is one of the best skating defensemen in this draft class and has the potential to be a top offensive blueliner at the NHL level. His ability to skate from one end of the ice to the other is remarkable. His composure on the power play is also very good, and he can use his hard shot from the point to create chances with the man advantage or at even strength. His aggressiveness on the offensive end gives opponents fits, but Rielly has the intelligence to know when to take a chance and when not to.
Rielly isn't a liability on defense, but he needs to add some muscle over the summer to be a more physical player in his own zone. His athleticism helps him correct any mistakes he makes defensively, and his speed allows him to recover well when he's caught out of position. To be a complete player and be able to log a lot of ice time in the NHL, Rielly needs to improve defensively.
Just like top prospect Alex Galchenyuk, much of Rielly's season was lost because of an ACL injury. Major knee injuries are always a concern when you are thinking about drafting a player in the top 15, but it doesn't seem like his knee injury will be an issue going forward.
If he can stay healthy throughout his professional career, Rielly could become one of the better scoring defensemen in the NHL for many years.
