Defending champion and world No. 1 Spain wasn't expected to have many problems advancing from Group C. Italy made it known in their first match that Spain would have to do far more than just show up if they wanted to survive group play.
Italy came out fired and ready to defend the furious Spain attack. This match rolled through the first half scoreless and it stayed that way until the 60th minute when Italy struck first and looked ready to shock the champs.
That look didn't last long, as it appeared to be the shot that woke the sleeping giant. Spain scored four minutes later and kept the pedal to the metal. However, Italy's defense would not let up, but thanks to fantastic defense and some errors by Fernando Torres, they held on for the draw.
Portugal 3, Denmark 2
Portugal entered this game after getting shut out by Germany in the opener. They wasted no time showing that their attack was far better than that effort.
They opened up a quick two-goal lead and looked well on their way to a lopsided win. Then Denmark's Nicklas Bendtner put his head into it.
He drilled two nice headers and equalized the score. Portugal would not be denied though and Silvestre Varela scored the game-winner in the 87th minute.
And this was all just part of the entertainment of this match; the other big part was that Cristiano Ronaldo was terrible.
England 3, Sweden 2
This was a match for the ages. England got off to a hot start and had a goal in the 23rd minute to show for it. Sweden soon began to swing momentum though, and by the 59th minute they had a 2-1 lead.
At that moment, they appeared to have a stranglehold on the match, and England's trend of failure in major championship looked primed to continue.
Then England neutralized in the 64th minute, and all of this action led to this sublime goal:
This goal turned out to be the winner, and what a winner it was to cap off this fantastic match.
