US Open Golf TV Coverage 2012: NBC and Online Info for Final 18
Tiger Woods had a disastrous back nine in Round 3, but the deficit he faces today isn't insurmountable. He will need to play superbly, though, not just good, if he wants to have a shot at catching Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk. He trails them by five strokes.
As daunting of a task as that sounds, here's how it can happen: If Woods shoots a two-under 68 today, coupled with a plus-three from McDowell and Furyk, he would be in the mix.
Neither of those events are completely impractical.
The Olympic course at San Francisco hasn't taken a bite out of McDowell or Furyk to this point. Neither man has shot higher than a 72 through three rounds. But the way this course has played, it makes you wonder how long they can escape its pitfalls.
It seems to have claimed at least one day from so many players in the event.
The worrisome thing about Tiger's play is that his scores are moving in the wrong direction. Generally, you'd like to see improvement from round to round; with Woods, it's been the opposite. A recovery to vault himself into contention would be an amazing feat, but not many would be surprised if he accomplished it.
It should be an interesting storyline to follow throughout the day.
