Tiger Woods: Why Tiger Will Fail Miserably in Final Round of US Open 2012

John RozumJun 17, 2012

Tiger Woods sits tied for No. 14 at the 2012 U.S. Open and has only gotten worse with each round.

It would be quite surprising if Woods pulled a 180-degree turn for the better and got back near the top of the leaderboard at the Olympic Club.

Let's take a look at why Woods will fail during the final round in San Francisco, Calif.

Tournament Decline

At this U.S. Open alone, Tiger Woods has gradually declined and been a significant disappointment.

In Round 1, the man shot an impressive 69 and bogeyed only two holes. Unfortunately, it just got worse from there as Woods hit 70 in the second round and then a 75 in Round 3.

Dropping from the top to outside of the Top 10, Woods bogeyed six holes in the third round to just one birdie.

Considering the decline throughout his time at the Olympic Club in 2012, Tiger's only chance to make a comeback is to play like he has nothing to lose. Because taking risks and desperation shots is about all that's left.

Olympic Club Struggles

Woods' inability to build off his strong start has ultimately cost him heading into Round 4.

On hole No. 3, for example, Woods went from par in Round 1 to a birdie in Round 2 and then a bogey in Round 3.

Had that been a par, Woods doesn't lose momentum for the remainder of the third round.

Tiger has bogeyed hole No. 6 in each round.

Unless Woods can fight through his inconsistency on hole No. 3 and weak play on No. 6, he'll simply be sitting lower on the leaderboard during Round 4.

Recent History

Not since 2008 has Tiger Woods won a major tournament (U.S. Open). If that holds true for the 2012 U.S. Open, Woods will not have won a major in four years, which would double his previous drought of two years (2003-04).

Tiger is also 36 years old and it's likely his best days have passed.

He did take home the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial Tournament this year, but Woods also failed to make the cut at Wells Fargo.

If anything, Woods has been inconsistent across the board since his last major and has not built up enough momentum and consistent play to make a quick turnaround.
