US Open Golf 2012 Leaderboard: Americans in Best Position to Win at Olympic Club

Patrick ClarkeJun 17, 2012

The Americans are playing well at the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco this Father's Day weekend. Jim Furyk is tied for the lead with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, who is just one year removed from a U.S. Open victory at Pebble Beach.

American Blake Adams knocked in four consecutive birdies to finish round three tied for fourth with three other golfers. In addition to Adams, John Peterson, Jason Dufner and Matt Kuchar are all Americans within striking distance heading into the final round.

They are not alone in their quest to bring the U.S. Open title back to America, though. Here are a few contenders representing the Stars and Stripes in best position to win the 2012 U.S. Open this weekend:

Jim Furyk

Jim Furyk has not won at the U.S. Open since 2003, but could very well get his second career major win this Sunday considering how consistent he has played through the tournament's first three rounds. Furyk has yet to shoot over par in any of the three rounds, and sits at 1-under heading into the final 18 holes.

The veteran Furyk will be around late on Sunday if he can continue to shoot par and keep the bogeys to a minimum. Furyk has just six bogeys through the first 54 holes at Olympic Club. He's tied for the lead after three rounds.

Tiger Woods

Tiger has won the U.S. Open three times in his career and is tied for 14th heading into Sunday. Despite a very poor third round from the Memorial Tournament winner, in which he shot a five-over 75, he is still just five strokes off  the lead and could easily find his way back into contention if the leaders slip up on Sunday.

Tiger is just a few birdies away from challenging the front runners, he has seven through three rounds. If he can sink a few birdies on Sunday then maybe he can apply enough pressure on the leaders before it's too late.

Beau Hossler

The 17-year-old is playing loose and with a ton of confidence after surviving a three-over 73 in round two on Friday. Hossler shot par for round three and finds himself in a six-way tie for eighth place heading into the final round of action at Olympic.

Hossler missed the cut at his first career U.S. Open appearance last summer at Congressional, but has surpassed expectations already in 2012 as he flirts with not only a Top 10 finish in San Francisco, but perhaps a win.
