Floyd Mayweather: Golden Boy Promotions Schemes to Take Money's Head by 2013
Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO) is still in jail for right now. When he gets out, likely before the end of August 2012, many young hungry fighters will await the 35-year-old.
Golden Boy Promotions, a company Mayweather has teamed up with to co-promote all his fights since 2007, has signed the majority of those young and hungry beasts who hunt for Mayweather's head.
Because of Mayweather's well-publicized "0" on his record and vast array of opposition defeated to maintain it, becoming the first man to snatch that "0" is the legacy-boost of a lifetime.
It also will make the young man who defeats Mayweather into a rich superstar, giving the lad an instant following.
Because Golden Boy and rival promoter Top Rank Promotions don't like working together in recent times, a fight with Top Rank's Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO) seems incredibly unlikely.
That means that whoever Golden Boy lines up as the next boxing messiah is who Mayweather will have to face until he decides to retire which he says won't be until he turns 37 years old.
That gives Golden Boy until February 2014 to raise the boxing messiah who can dispel the gospel of Mayweather that says he can't be beaten.
Mayweather may make Golden Boy riches in the short term as the biggest star currently active in boxing, but a younger warrior is necessary to continue keep Golden Boy wealthy for years to come.
Like the Highlander movie series, the man who beheads Mayweather gains fortune and fame beyond his wildest dreams.
Here's Golden Boy's plan to take Mayweather's head by the end of 2013.
Move Robert Guerrero Up to 147
1 of 4Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO) moves up to welterweight for the first time this July 28 against tough knockout king Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KO) for the WBC interim world title.
Should the 29-year-old former featherweight and super featherweight world champ win the fight, he could be groomed for a future showdown with Mayweather.
Guerrero's wife has cancer and he has pulled out of fights to take care of her at times. This can be sold as an inspiring story to make him the perfect hero to counter Mayweather's cocky villainous persona.
The interim WBC belt Guerrero gets if he defeats Aydin could become the full-fledged title while Mayweather's in jail and unable to defend it.
This could inspire Mayweather to want his belt back and be ready out of jail to come get it.
Send Saul "Canelo" Alvarez Through the Gauntlet
2 of 4Mayweather doesn't want to move back up to 154 after his tough bout with Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO) there.
But Saul Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO) is a 21-year-old boxing prodigy quickly ascending the throne as Mexico's next superstar.
With Alvarez being a rising star, especially in Mexico, his value as a moneymaker is huge and Mayweather's nickname is "Money" for a reason.
Alvarez's patience and power have earned him the WBC junior middleweight (154 lbs.) championship.
While the Mexican fans cheer his name in recognition, the American audience is beginning to gain a familiarity with him by his presence on the undercards of Mayweather's past three pay-per-view events.
Alvarez recently defeated Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO) on the undercard of Mayweather-Cotto this past May 5th. He next faces Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO) on September 15.
Mayweather defeated Mosley in 2010 and Ortiz in 2011. Alvarez is aiming to prove to the fans he deserves a shot at Mayweather by defeating the men Mayweather's most recently vanquished.
If Alvarez defeats Ortiz in September, there are rumors he could face Cotto in December. After beating Mosley, Ortiz and Cotto, Alvarez will have accomplished in one year what Mayweather did in three.
If that doesn't prepare and set Alvarez up to face Mayweather on Cinco de Mayo weekend of 2013, nothing will.
Give Devon Alexander a Title
3 of 4Devon Alexander (23-1, 13 KO) has recently successfully debuted in the welterweight division.
The 25-year-old former junior welterweight world champion is setting his eyes on Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO)—the current IBF welterweight world champ for an August 18th showdown.
If Alexander dethrones the 37-year-old Bailey as he would be expected to do, a future unification with WBC champ Mayweather would definitely be in the cards.
A possible unification with WBC interim champ Guerrero if he defeats Aydin this July could certainly help his chances by eliminating a fellow contender for the opportunity to face Mayweather.
Unlike Guerrero, who can fight on Mexican holidays to boost his profile, Alexander doesn't have such an advantage. If Guerrero gets the interim WBC title, it's best Alexander lure him into a fight immediately.
Redeem Amir Khan
4 of 4Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO) is still a junior welterweight but has ambitions of moving up to welterweight after his next fight.
He recently lost by majority decision to Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO) but was vindicated in the eyes of his fans by recent drug test results that showed Peterson was taking synthetic testosterone.
Now, he aims to dethrone WBC junior welterweight champ Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO) in order to reassert his domination of the junior welterweight division before moving up.
Expect his first fight to be a rematch with Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KO) for the WBA welterweight belt.
Khan obliterated Malignaggi in 2010 as when they were both junior welterweights. Now that Malignaggi has bounced back, moved up and won a world title, he's open to a Khan rematch for the right money.
Malignaggi is even negotiating to face a former Khan foe in Dmitriy Salita (33-1, 17 KO) this October in Brooklyn. Salita was knocked out by Khan in the first round.
If he can obtain the WBA world title from Malignaggi or Salita, Khan could set up a unification match with possible future IBF champ Alexander or possible future WBC interim champ Guerrero.
The unification matches could bring greater credibility to his eventual challenge to Mayweather in 2013.
