Tiger Woods: Scores and Analysis from Day 2

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Tiger Woods is in perfect position to win the 2012 U.S. Open after shooting a round of even par 70 on Day 2. He is only one of three men to end up in red figures after the first two rounds, along with David Toms and Jim Furyk.

Tiger started the second round on fire, shooting one-under par through the first four holes after making birdie on the par-three third hole. He made sound decisions and didn't try to push the envelope.

His shot into the green on the third hole was nothing short of sheer brilliance, as Woods landed the ball well short of the green and allowed the slope to do the work for him. His shot ended up about five feet from the hole, and he didn't fail to drain the putt.

Then, disaster struck as Woods bogeyed holes five through seven, moving him from two-under par to one-over par. He was a bit unlucky on the sixth hole, as his second shot into the green ended up getting caught in the rough right above the left greenside bunker. Woods managed to salvage a bogey on that hole by making the best of a terrible situation.

People that haven't been convinced of Tiger's return to dominance surely thought at that point that they were correct in their thinking.

Apparently they were wrong.

Woods managed to somehow contain his emotions and went on another solid run, shooting two-under par on the next six holes. He once again took advantage of a par-three—hole No. 13—by hitting another phenomenal shot into the green that ended up within five feet.

He then made par on the final five holes to end his round at even par heading into Saturday's third round. Woods' second round was a classic, grinding performance that sets him up to contend for the U.S. Open Trophy this weekend.

The only players that are on the leaderboard that present a legitimate threat to Woods' 15th major championship are David Toms, Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell. The other players at the top will likely fall off the leaderboard on Saturday—moving day, as they call it—as the men separate themselves from the boys, so to speak.

Woods has shown over the course of the first two days that his game, mind and attitude are back in championship form. He's going to be the man to beat over the weekend, and I predict he'll end up out-grinding the field to win this year's U.S. Open.

Here is the leaderboard through two rounds, according to USOpen.com.
