US Open Golf Results 2012: Latest Results for Friday's Action
By Friday afternoon, fans of the US Open can get a good picture of who’s hot and who’s not in the great golf tournament.
The talk of the town has been centered on Michael Thompson and Jim Furyk, who have been surprise favorites in the early half of the tournament. Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland has been streaky hot and playing extraordinarily well thus far and has made his name known as well.
And perhaps the most important and notable player so far has been, of course, Tiger Woods. Woods has remained atop the leaderboard within a few strokes of the pole spot and has found the zone that so many fans are familiar with seeing him in.
Other names that have been producing beyond the usual capacity include David Toms, Beau Hossler, Blake Adams and J.B. Park.
Furyk and Toms have saved both of their sand shots in an impressive fashion, and Tiger Woods has recorded 10 of 14 fairway hits for a ridiculously persuasive 71.43 percent. On 24 puts, Michael Thompson has averaged 283 yards of driving distance and maintains the lead thus far.
The most dominant player, however, has been Jim Furyk. Furyk has been the most consistent player in the tournament. On 61 puts, he already has four birdies. Furyk is indeed the player to watch in round two.
On the other side of the ball, there are certain household names trailing far, far behind.
Luke Donald, for instance, has already recorded 14 bogies and only three birdies. He has not recorded any sand saves in his three attempts, and is shooting at or around only 50 percent for his fairway hits and greens. He is currently tied for 130th on the leaderboard.
Rory McIlroy, too, has been slumping. He is below the projected cut, and his 12 bogies have not helped. He is overshooting with an average driving distance of 311.75 yards, and has only three birdies through two rounds. Missing the cut would be a big blow to his ego and prestige.
As a student at the University of Oregon, I also feel compelled to mention that our golf coach, Casey Martin, currently sits only one spot below the cut-off for the next round. While five of his first six attempts were for bogie, he went on to earn two more birdies to close the first round. In the second round, which he has now completed, he was more consistent, shooting around four in each attempt. He ended his two rounds with a score of +5.
Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, is currently above the cut.
Tied for 78th, he recorded one birdie in the first round and is now playing in round two. Bubba Watson, on the other hand, is right on the bubble. He had been playing well until his last stroke of the first round, in which he recorded a double bogie. It was the second time that it took Watson six strokes to get the ball in the hole.
At 17 years old, Santa Margarita High School’s Beau Hossler has been sneaky hot and continues to remain near the top of the leaderboard and could be an emerging star.
