Euro 2012 Schedule: Can't-Miss Games on Tap for This Weekend

Jessica MarieJun 1, 2018

Now that every team in every group has played at least two games, many of the Euro 2012 hopefuls are in do-or-die mode. Fortunately for the fans, many of those do-or-die contests happen this weekend.

While a team like Germany may have very little to worry about as it heads into its third game at Euro, others—and almost everyone in Group B—must be on their A-game the next time out to avoid going home much earlier than they'd hoped.

Here's a look at the decisive games you can't miss this weekend.

Greece vs. Russia
Saturday, June 16 at 2:45 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPN, ESPN3

The best thing Russia could do for itself in a group that has become just a little bit too tight for comfort is simply destroy the lowest team on the rung with the longest odds of winning Euro 2012. If Russia can do that, it can keep itself ahead of the Czech Republic and Poland; if it loses and Czech Republic wins, it could get leapfrogged in the standings.

Greece, with just one point thus far, is also facing a must-win, but against one of the top-notch teams in the field, it's going to be a massive long shot. Still, Greece coach Fernando Santos scoffed at the idea that his team wasn't up for the Euro challenge. He told Reuters' Justin Palmer:

"

"It has been written in the [Greek] press that our team was not well-prepared in the first two matches against the Czech Republic and Poland ... but this was not the case."

"

Russia has beaten Greece nine times out of 10 in the past, and given the fact that this Greece team has had trouble coming up with offense, its task in order to stay alive is looking very tall.

Denmark vs. Germany
Sunday, June 17 at 2:45 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPN2, ESPN3

Germany is in the best shape of any team at Euro. It's the only team that has won each of its first two games and it is in prime position to advance from the epic Group of Death with flying colors. All that stands in the way is Denmark, the team that was supposed to be the throwaway loser in the group before it knocked off Netherlands 1-0 in an opening-game shocker.

After losing to Portugal in its second game, though, Denmark looks a lot less scary, and the Germans aren't intimidated. There's no team as talented and no team as confident as the Germans are at present, and they're already thinking ahead to the quarterfinals.

But Denmark doesn't even necessarily need a win in order to keep its Euro dreams alive: If it plays to a draw versus Germany and the Netherlands beats Portugal, Denmark could find itself moving on. Though it would certainly like to take fate into its own hands and take down Germany, a draw isn't a bad goal to shoot for.

Portugal vs. Netherlands
Sunday, June 17 at 2:45 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPN, ESPN3

Netherlands has yet to tally a single point at Euro 2012 and is on the verge of a very disappointing finish, given this a team that was at least supposed to put up a fight in the exceedingly challenging Group B.

The Netherlands has only scored one goal thus far at Euro 2012, and that is unlikely to be enough to contend with a Portugal squad that netted three its last time out. Granted, Portugal has been far from lights-out at Euro and could flop just as easily as the Netherlands might—it got shut out in its first game against Germany—but Holland has looked as hopeless as any team in the field. Portugal should at least be able to capitalize on Holland's shoddy defense in order to advance.

If the Netherlands has any hopes of continuing to play, it has to win by two goals and Germany also has to win—unlikely for a team that's been offensively stagnant thus far.
