Free Agency Preveiw: Fullbacks and Tight Ends

Bryan BrackneyFeb 10, 2009

Top available free-agent fullbacks

1. Leonard Weaver: Young and talented; Seattle's most coveted free agent.

2. Heath Evans: Very versatile and genuine team player. Can play special teams, tight end.

3. Tony Richardson: Does not run a lot anymore and has lost most of his speed, but he can still catch.

4. Terrelle Smith: Old, but had a good season in 2008. He does not get in stat sheet often, but is a sledgehammer. He might leave as the Cardinals already have Tim Castille.

5. Lorenzo Neal: Has paved the way for running backs for a decade. Two seasons ago he would have been No. 1, but he's old now and probably will retire.

6. Moran Norris: It would be surprising if he gets a deal in free agency. He will probably get signed during training camp, when somebody gets hurt.

7. Cecil Sapp: The Texans will not re-sign him. He can play running back too and is more of a runner than a blocker.

8. Corey McIntrye: Not a starting fullback, but should compete for a roster spot in somebody's camp.

Top available free agent tight ends

1. Bo Scaife: Will not return to Tennessee, easily replaced by Alge Crumpler. Better receiver than Crumpler. One of the top free-agent steals available. Should get about 50 receptions a season.

2. L.J. Smith: Good receiving tight end. Would serve him best if he re-signed with Philadelphia. Needs to improve his blocking.

3. Jerramy Stevens: The best receiving tight end in the NFL. Plays in the slot like a receiver. Needs to improve maturity.

4. Dan Campbell: Great blocking tight end, when healthy.

5. Will Heller: Blocking specialist who will leave Seattle to find a starting gig.

6. Bubba Franks: Is not the Brett Favre Bubba of the early 2000's anymore.

7. Justin Peelle: Keeps hanging around. Can play H-Back and is a good receiver in the flats.

8. Jim Kleinsasser: Good blocker, awful receiver. Could start for the Scott Linehan-coached Lions where he knows the offense and he can help out the line.

9. Daniel Wilcox: Good goal-line threat. Looks like a receiver. Needs more durability. Good player who is in his prime.

10. Tony Stewart: Good blocker. Never has distinguished himself as a starter, but he has improved.

11. Mark Campbell: Average receiver. Good third tight end. Has not made the most of his opportunities.

12. John Owens: Will not get signed in normal free agency period.

13. Sean Ryan: Average player who is not good at anything, but not bad either.

14. Marcus Pollard: Washed up and will retire if he does not find any takers.

15. Darnell Dinkins: Good special teamer who will have trouble making a roster and will not get signed in free agency period.

16. Billy Bajema: Former offensive tackle. A great blocker, but has only caught two passes in past three seasons.
