10 College Football Coaches You'd Want on Your Side in a Fight

Carl StineJun 17, 2012

Everybody knows the key to winning every fight you will ever be in is to have a good wingman.

It's all about that wingman.

The coaches on this list, for varying reasons, would make the ideal guy to have by your side if fisticuffs appear ready to break out.

Most of them get the nod for being in pretty solid shape and not looking like a water buffalo at this point in their careers, but some of them emerged as candidates for other reasons.

While taking your head coach into battle might not seem like a good idea, trust me, these guys would make it interesting.

10. Steve Addazio, Temple

1 of 10

He's an angry elf.

The real reason Addazio gets the nod is the 'stache.

It's really hard to take him seriously with the fuzz on his upper lip, and no doubt, your antagonists in the back alley would have to resign from the field smirking.

9. Bill Snyder, Kansas State

2 of 10

Two simple reasons.

Any man that can handle a coaching staff and a squad full of football players at 72 is on to something.

Also, nobody wants to hit a man that looks like a grandfather.

Enough said.

8. Joker Phillips, Kentucky

3 of 10

Phillips looks ready to run a 10K right now.

Or maybe bench press twice his body weight.

Whatever the athletic endeavor, the man honestly looks ready for it.

While his Kentucky teams have not been the greatest of fighters on the field, with a record of 11-14, it's pretty obvious one would not want to mess with him in a fight.

7. Butch Jones, Cincinnati

4 of 10

He's obviously got some level of physical capability, considering how he runs up and down the sideline all day on Saturdays.

He's not the most chiseled of head coaches (it feel' weird talking about head coaches in that context), but with a name such as "Butch", he couldn't fail to make this list.

His name will be be more familiar after Cincy repeats as Big East champs in 2012.

6. Bo Pelini, Nebraska

5 of 10

Brotherly love, how sweet.

Carl Pelini has moved on to the head coaching job at FAU, but Bo remains at Nebraska, showing us facial contortions we never though possible, except for on Jim Carrey.

While it's reasonable to assume that every coach gets angry at the referees, how the game is going or his players, Pelini's meltdown on quarterback Taylor Martinez was epic.

Just the kind of intensity you want backing you up.

5. Les Miles, LSU

6 of 10

Sometimes, just being crazy is enough to make your opponents in a brawl a little nervous.

Les Miles is definitely that.

Besides the fact that he's a pretty big fella, all he has to do to cause whoever is annoying him to back off is just act normal.

Eat some grass, pick his nose on national television or something of that nature.

4. Bronco Mendenhall, BYU

7 of 10

His name is Bronco.

That just sounds like a guy you don't want to mess with.

He's got the looking angry part down, and is in better shape than most college football coaches.

The kicker, however, is his resemblance to Shrek.

And who wants to mess with a large, green ogre?

3. Mario Cristobal, FIU

8 of 10

He's a big dude that can grow solid facial hair.

He's one of the younger head coaches in the country, and has some experience in the trenches to back him up.

He was a member of Miami's 1989 and 1991 national championship teams as an offensive tackle, and that experience on the front lines would serve him well in a fight.

2. Bobby Hauck, UNLV

9 of 10

Sometimes, all you need to make the other guy back down is an ice-cold stare.

Hauck definitely has that down.

On top of that, he's under 50, and appears to be in reasonably good shape.

Maybe his success in a brawl would be better than his miserable 4-21 record on the field at UNLV.

1. Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern

10 of 10

He appears to be reliable.

Fitzgerald has stuck around at Northwestern, not leaving for a better program, more money, or a program that can invest more into football.

That's a quality you want in somebody who has your back, reliability.

It also doesn't hurt that he looks as if he could still play linebacker.
